Optometrist

Summary

Doctor of optometry, providing primary vision care.  Examine patients’ eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases. Test visual acuity, depth and color perception, and ability to focus and coordinate eyes.  Prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses.  Coordinate work with a focus on effective communication with patients and staff in order to ensure quality patient care and optimum patient experience. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position provides leadership for clinic staff.  This position collaborates with ophthalmologists, Clinic Manager and technical staff to ensure quality patient care and services. This position works directly with, and provides leadership and guidance to technical staff. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Communicate with patients in a professional and courteous manner; introduce self and explain role to the patient and/or the patient’s family; acquaint patient with the clinic procedures and inform the patient of the purpose of all tests to be performed and how the patient will be affected during those tests.
• Examine patients’ eyes in order to diagnose eye disease, vision defects, abnormality and injuries. 
• Take anatomical and functional ocular measurements of the eye and surrounding tissue.
• Test ocular functions, including visual acuity and visual fields; perform refractions and retinoscopy.
• Perform diagnostic tests that help ensure the accurate diagnosis and treatment of a diseased eye.
• Educate patients on the best practices to enhance the health of their eyes.
• Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, or other corrective eye wear to improve the patient’s vision. 
• Refer to ophthalmologist for evaluation of medical conditions and treatment for diseases of the eye.
• May provide preoperative and/or postoperative care to cataract patients, as well as patients who have had laser vision correction or other eye surgery.
• Keep current with trends in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases
• Demonstrate team values through cooperation and consideration of coworkers; foster goodwill among coworkers by providing assistance when needed and sharing information that helps others do their jobs; interact with tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
• Foster teamwork among staff and colleagues to ensure quality patient care and the optimum patient experience; share information appropriately and complete the communication circle with follow-up as needed; communicate in a positive, upbeat manner while refraining from complaining, gossiping, or engaging in conversations of a negative tone. 
• Protect confidential patient information, and use good judgment in sharing patient information in a manner that is consistent with patient care and current laws and regulations, including HIPAA.
• Adhere to all safety standards as established by company policy and OSHA requirements.
• Perform work in compliance with company policy, department procedures and regulatory requirements, including State and Federal laws and regulations.

Secondary Functions

• Other duties which may be necessary or desirable to serve the patient and support the success of the department or the company overall.

Education and/or Experience; Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations (Minimum Requirements)

• A doctor of optometry and a current license, in good standing, in the Oregon State.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of devices, equipment and tools used in the examination of the eyes.
• Possess excellent communication skills.
• Possess excellent interpersonal and people management skills.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

• Majority of work is performed in a general office environment. Exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced environment.
• Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.                
• Manual/finger dexterity as necessary to perform daily job duties.
• Occasionally required to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
• Occasionally required to sit for extended periods of time.
• Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; lift, push, pull and/or carry objects up to 20 pounds.
