DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

TheWindward School is currently seeking a Director of Marketing & Communications. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer and serving as a member of the Head of Schools leadership team, the Director of Marketing and Communications shares broad responsibilities to advance the mission, reputation, and capacity of The Windward School in fulfillment of its strategic priorities and core values across all three campusesWestchester Lower School, Westchester Middle School, and Manhattan Lower and Middle Schools as well as The Windward Institute. Along with Windwards senior leadership and external consultants, the Director will manage and elevate the school's brand through strategic planning, market insight, trend analysis, and consumer feedback to provide strong cohesion across the schools activities.

The Director will oversee strategic planning and processes that yield integrated school-wide communications and inbound and outbound marketing that support the schools mission; convey its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging with authenticity and sophistication; meet the needs of multiple constituencies and departments; and advance Windwards standing in the local community and the independent school community nationwide. This senior leader will collaborate with the admissions office to ensure that the schools overall and division-specific messaging effectively communicates the value of a Windward education to prospective families while partnering closely with the development office to ensure that the communications for fundraising and alumni connections appropriately reflect the schools mission and voice and support the offices objectives. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with the Chief Advancement Officer on the schools public relations approach. This includes managing media contacts and requests while working with the head of school on communications to proactively promote the school and safeguard its reputation in moments of crisis. This role will build, coach, and manage a high-performing communications team that is equipped to meet the needs of a dynamic and evolving institution, including digital strategy, social media, print publications, brand management, and media and public relations. In addition to leading the work of the Windward communications team, they will be managing external resource companies (website developers, graphic designers, freelance photographers, and others).

Qualifications

This position is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious and equity-minded leader who is a big-picture thinker with a track record of innovation, collaboration, and mission-driven leadership. Minimum qualifications include a bachelors degree (advanced degree preferred) in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, education, or a related field, and five to seven years of progressive, full-time experience in strategic communications and/or public relations, with at least three years of experience managing a communications team. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in strategic communications for independent schools, colleges or universities, or social impact organizations.

  • Sophisticated utilization of social media, web, digital, print, and multimedia strategies in support of organizational mission, values, and priorities.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills and proficiency in communicating and engaging effectively with a wide range of constituencies, including senior leadership, faculty, board members, parents/guardians, staff, alumni, and students.

  • Creating and leading integrated communications campaigns, brand awareness, and media strategy with a relevant portfolio of proven outcomes.

  • Knowledge of trends and best practices in brand management and public relations, as well as communication technologies.

  • Proactive integration of core values and diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging into communications and brand strategies.

  • The ability to develop and implement strategic campaigns and research-based communications plans.

  • Expertise in making presentations and communicating with the media and key stakeholders, especially in a crisis or controversial situation.

  • Managing complex projects in a fast-paced organization with multiple stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Generate rich and creative online content that is optimized for search engines andengages theschool's various constituencies.

  • Provide editorial direction and manage the development, design, production,distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic communications including,but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, andwebsite.

  • Coordinate webpage maintenanceensure that new and consistent information(article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.

  • Ensure school website has an interactive parentand faculty/staffportal and is mobilecompatible.

  • Ensure school website, parent and faculty/staff portals remain compatibleonall industrystandardbrowsers.

  • Hire and train publication assistants/free-lancewriters as necessary.

  • Track and measure over time the level of engagement with theschool's variousaudiences through variouscommunication instruments.

  • Provide recommendations regarding School's current and future communicationplatforms, including website(s), social media and public relations efforts.

  • Serve as a public spokesperson and representative for theSchool.

  • Actively contributing and supporting the DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging) initiatives of The Schoolas well as working with the Director of DEIB to craft culturally sensitive and appropriate communications.

  • Identify educational policy issues relevant to theschool that can be leveraged tosupportWindward'smission and create and implement plans to exploit them.

  • Lead communications/ marketing projects as assigned, such as WTTI marketing andDevelopment fundraising and special eventsinitiatives.

  • Support the Head of Schooland Chief Advancement Officerregarding strategic communication activities includingspeech writing and presentations delivered to faculty, parents, Board ofTrustees,andother internal and external events.

  • Other duties as assigned bytheHeadof School andChief Advancement Officer.

Working Environment

  • This is a multi-campus role and travel between all three campuses (two in White Plains and one in Manhattan) is required.

  • This position will be required to work weekends and evenings, as needed.

  • Work is performed in an office environment as well as in various off-site locations.
