Role:

The Security Officer ensures the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors. This role involves maintaining a visible presence on campus, monitoring school grounds, enforcing safety rules, and responding to incidents professionally and respectfully. The Security Officer works as part of a team to promote a secure and welcoming environment, aligned with the school’s values of equity, inclusion, and social justice.

 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrol school grounds, hallways, and entry/exit points to maintain a secure environment.

  • Monitor for unauthorized access, suspicious behavior, or safety hazards.

  • Assist with the safe arrival and dismissal of students, ensuring traffic and crowd control as needed.

  • Respond promptly to security incidents, including disturbances, medical emergencies, or unauthorized access.

  • Document and report incidents to the Security Lead.

  • Assist in resolving conflicts and de-escalating situations in a calm and respectful manner.

  • Supervise hallways during class changes, recess, and other high-traffic times to ensure order and safety.

  • Address tardiness, loitering, and other minor policy violations respectfully and fairly.

  • Build positive relationships with students to foster trust and cooperation.

  • Participate in emergency drills and assist in executing evacuation, lockdown, or other response plans.

  • Be familiar with the school’s emergency procedures and communicate them effectively to others.

  • Support students and staff during emergencies to ensure safety and order.

  • Collaborate with the Security Lead and school staff to implement security protocols effectively.

  • Act as a visible and approachable resource for students, staff, and visitors seeking assistance.

  • Report maintenance needs or safety concerns to the appropriate department.

  • Uphold the school’s values of equity, inclusion, and social justice in all interactions.

  • Treat all students, staff, and visitors with respect and fairness.

  • Participate in training on cultural competency and restorative practices as required.

Salary: $18.00/hr

Qualifications

Required Education & Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
     

Experience:

  • Prior experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred but not required.

  • Experience in a school or educational environment is a plus.
     

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong observation and communication skills.

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively in emergencies.

  • Basic conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.

  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and respond quickly as needed.

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts and social justice principles.
     

Certifications:

  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (or ability to obtain them)
     

Work Environment

  • Primarily stationed on school premises with regular patrols and hall monitoring duties.

  • Requires physical activity, including standing and walking for extended periods.

  • Some evening and weekend work is required for school events.
