JOB TITLE:       Climbing Wall Instructor                                                                                                                    FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Statement of Duties: Instructs and monitors members in the safe use of the climbing wall and related equipment. 

Supervision Received:    Works under the direction of the Assistant Facility Managers and Facility Manager.

Supervision Exercised:   None.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Examples of Duties:  

The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Provides a variety of climbing related instruction to members and guests to include orientations, belay classes, Lead climbing classes, beginner, intermediate and advanced rock-climbing classes, and bouldering and spotting technique.
  • Administer tests to verify members have mastered safe climbing, belay and Lead climbing skills.
  • Assists members in the use of the wall by belaying or spotting climbers.
  • Responsible for daily/ weekly/ monthly safety inspections on the climbing wall and related equipment including, but not limited to, ropes, harnesses, carabineers, belay devices, ascender, holds and bolts.
  • Assures members’ use of the wall area is in compliance with HRCA Rules and Regulations and with climbing wall safety policy.
  • Assists members with managing private functions in the wall area, including birthday parties and other events.
  • Assists with the route setting program.
  • Assists with completing maintenance of the climbing wall including replacing and repairing wood panels, t-nuts, quick draws, bolts and other climbing devices.
  • May teaches private and semi-private lessons to climbers of all ages and skill levels. 
  • Assists with equipment desk duties, such as cleaning equipment, gym set up and clean up
  • Participates in the mission of the organization of “Enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events, and leadership.”
  • Performs related duties as assigned and required.

Physical and Environmental Standards:  

Most work is performed indoors in a climbing wall setting where noise and interruptions prevail.  Work can also be performed outdoors in different types of conditions including, but not limited to, heat, wind, cold, rain and snow.  Must be able to frequently sit, walk, stand, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, push or pull.  Must be able to stand/ walk/ rove for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours per shift.  Manual dexterity is needed to perform basic climbing wall functions.  The ability to talk and hear via the telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed.  Vision requirements include near and far acuity.  Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/ remove a maximum of 50 pounds unassisted and 100 pounds with assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

Ability to physically perform demands associated with belaying, spotting, route setting and maintenance.  Must have in depth knowledge of route setting and indoor climbing gear/equipment and devices. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with members and coworkers and provide excellent customer service.  Must be able to see, hear, and verbally communicate to effectively supervise members.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 

Must be at least 18 years of age. 

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Education:  

Completion of one year of high school is desired.

Experience:

Lead Climbing must be at Intermediate skill level and 3 months experience is desired. .
