SUMMARY

HRCA Therapeutic Recreation Programs are intended to enhance the quality of life of individuals with special needs. Programs are facilitated by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and/or qualified staff. We provide a quality and compassionate community-based environment for participants of all ages and abilities.

By participating in recreation and leisure activities, individuals enjoy a healthier more fulfilled lifestyle and a deeper sense of belonging and involvement in the community.  We work towards social independence in a fun and safe environment, while encouraging a general sense of health, wellness, and improved quality of life. 

By volunteering for the HRCA Therapeutic Recreation Program you will be making a difference and positively impacting the life of a person with a disability. 

 

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Gym sports camps and Wednesday evening practices; hip hop, taekwondo, and yoga classes; Special Olympics tennis, bowling, swim team; Unified Basketball; spring and fall dances; Thrilling Thursdays young adult program; special events and fundraisers. 

 

VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION

  • Accept direction from the TR Leader.
  • Assist participants as needed.  This may include demonstrating appropriate skills, offering encouragement and enthusiasm, repeating instructions and helping participants to follow them.
  • Assist with set up and clean up of assigned program.
  • Communicate with the TR Leader regarding all essential information learned about participants. 

 

VOLUNTEERING LOCATION
We offer programs at all 4 of the HRCA recreation centers.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS

  • A person who loves working with people with disabilities and special needs regardless of gender or ability level.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure during stressful situations. 
  • The ability to talk to program participants using simple directions to achieve success. 
  • Basic knowledge of program specific skills.
  • Adaptability.

DAYS AND TIMES

Participants come to know and love their volunteers.  We ask that you commit to attend the full duration of the specific program. 
Most activities run monthly.  Special Olympics Sports run 1 or 2 days a week for 2 months.  Camps may be 5 days, or 2 days a week.  Dances and events will be just a few hours.
