Position Overview 

The GIS Specialist is responsible for support of all operations with up to the minute charting and analysis of SubCom’s various undertakings, any hazards, or any regulatory issue that may cause delay to the schedule. This includes routine GIS charting for Permitting or Repair team submittals. The team of which this specialist would be a part also maintains the daily report database and is responsible for development and troubleshooting of the database. The GIS Specialist will also be expected to research and develop innovative solutions (such as new analytical methods and/or new ways to present complex issues) for the individual Marine Departments, such as Submersibles, Shore Ends, Installation, Survey, and DTS.

Responsibilities

  • Work to grow SubCom’s Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) footprint and integrate GIS tools into existing work streams
  • Build in new GIS methodologies into Marine workflows and research cutting-edge remote sensing technologies and data-sources that could be leveraged for DTS analyses and risk assessments
  • Work closely with the Marine Engineering and Cable Installation Team
  • Interface with other internal teams, such as Marine Documentation, Bids & Proposals, Permitting, and Marine Liaison, to synchronize GIS work streams and create new GIS tools, data layers, and functionality that can assist marine survey and installation
  • Engage with the Marine Engineering and Cable Installation Team using their risk assessment and work flows to further enhance DTS deliverables and provide input into GIS tool development
  • Consistently adhere to SubCom’s core values, policies and procedures
  • Up to 10% travel may be required

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • BS or BA in relevant field or equivalent experience required. MS or MA in relevant field is a plus
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in directly related discipline (geography, ocean or marine science or engineering) required
  • Knowledge of undersea cable system planning, survey, and route selection required
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage multiple, and at times competing priorities
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with the team, management peers, and internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems or resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Computer literate; proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Articulates thoughts and ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively
  • Ability to work effectively within a fast paced rapidly changing environment
