JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing and managing complex accounting functions for the organization in partnership with the Director of Finance and Office Manager.

 

Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.  The position ensures adherence to deadlines and manages a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation and review, accounts payable review, financial reporting, donor restricted net assets compliance, monthly account reconciliations, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities. 

 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and other reporting for management, the Board of Directors, committees, and grants. 
  • Support forecasting and other planning activities. 
  • Prepare various monthly allocation and recurring journal entries including overhead and payroll allocations. 
  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources, while maintaining an elevated level of accuracy in an expanding business model. 
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations as well as prepare and review journal entries and reconciliations prepared by the Office Manager. 
  • Manage Donor Restricted Net Assets, account for AFTD grant programs and monitor compliance across the organization with established rules and regulations. 
  • Monitor quarterly and annual tasks to ensure clean and timely year-end audits. 
  • Provide documents and support as needed to external auditors for year-end audits and tax returns. 

 

 Other Job Functions

  • Conscientiously follows company policies and practices and takes care of organizational property.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel for organizational meetings and events as needed.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position is an individual contributor and does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required

 

Licensure/Credentials:

  • Active CPA license preferred

 

Experience:

  • 4-6 years of financial accounting or audit accounting experience, preferably experience working in the nonprofit sector

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks Online
  • Knowledge of Concur and Salesforce software preferred.
  • Proven experience in grant accounting within the nonprofit sector preferred
  • Strong understanding of grant compliance regulations and reporting standards.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with expense reporting and invoice management software 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, Outlook), PowerPoint and editing of PDF files. 
  • Experience with Payroll HRIS reporting 
  • Strong GAAP/internal controls knowledge 
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. 
  • Highly organized and efficient in completing various projects with overlapping deadlines. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with members of staff.
