Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is a key member of the Finance team, responsible for ensuring accurate financial records, maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, and supports the Controller with strategic financial initiatives. This role contributes directly to organizational decision-making by managing the state billings, providing reliable reporting, insightful analysis, and effective collaboration with department managers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Reporting

  • Assist with the month-end close process including ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare draft monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for Controller review.  This includes balance sheets and profit & loss reports for all entities and locations.
  • Perform financial analysis and variance reporting to identify trends.
  • Manage Medicaid/Medicare billing and reconciliation.
  • Collaborate with department managers to review financial activity and address reporting needs.

Compliance & Audit

  • Prepare and submit government and regulatory filings under the Controller’s supervision.
  • Support the audit processes by providing requested documentation and reconciliations, answering queries, and ensuring all audit requirements are met.
  • Maintain documentation for financial transactions and internal controls.

Annual Budget

  • Assist in the preparation and consolidation of the organization’s annual operating budget.
  • Collaborate with managers to gather, review, and validate budget inputs.
  • Maintain detailed records of budget assumptions and calculations.
  • Work with managers to monitor budgets and spending.
  • Support leadership in identifying cost-saving opportunities and financial efficiencies.

Contract Review

  • Assist in reviewing vendor contract terms.
  • Reconcile invoices to contract terms flagging discrepancies or overages for further review.
  • Liaise with department managers and vendors to clarify financial terms or resolve discrepancies.

Project Oversight & Process Improvement

  • Support or lead finance-related projects, including system upgrades, process automation, procedural documentation, training materials, position summaries, and reporting enhancements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices and improve financial workflows.

Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Provide mentorship and training to other team members.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as ratios and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

 

Reasoning Ability:

 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Technology Skills:

 

Utilizes computers to accomplish job tasks. Computer literacy is essential in word processing, graphic designs, spreadsheet applications, and databases. Knowledge of Outlook or similar program.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.
  • 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or healthcare setting.
  • 1 – 3 years of Month-End Close experience
  • Advanced Excel Skills (Pivot Tables, INDEX-MATCH, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, etc)
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to work additional hours during month-end close periods.
  • Experience with SAGE intact is a plus
  • Public Accounting (Audit) experience is a plus

 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $70,000 – $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
