Gallery Teacher

Gallery Teachers plan and lead high-quality museum tour experiences for K-12 audiences and maintain and organize the museum’s family spaces. In collaboration with colleagues and educators, Gallery Teachers devise and deliver engaging and fun experiences for students in the galleries and across the museum’s campus. This position reports to the Manager of School & Tour Programs. The default schedule is 21 hours per week - Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.           

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate engaging, age-appropriate, and curricula-informed tours and in-gallery experiences for K-12 audiences.
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of educational tours and programs.
  • Set and communicate tour expectations and interact attentively, professionally, and patiently with participants.
  • Enforce museum guidelines and the Courtesy Code with care to ensure the safety of visitors, staff and works of art on display.
  • Assist with the research and creation of analog and digital resources, including videos, classroom activities, and lesson plans.
  • Provides organization and upkeep, including light cleaning, of the museum’s interactive spaces and associated storage areas, including Creative Commons and the Family Room.
  • Ability to flex hours to assist in other programming, including M&T Bank First Fridays and other annual programs.
  • Stay abreast of the AKG’s collection, programs, and special exhibitions.
  • Act as an ambassador of the museum, interacting with visitors in ways that support our mission and values.
  • Participate in professional development related to job responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • BA in Education, Museum Studies, Art History, Studio Art, or related experience
  • Experience working with K-12 grade students in formal or informal learning environments.
  • Experience working with youth from a variety of backgrounds, demographics, and abilities

Skills/Abilities/Competencies:

  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and comfort interacting in a friendly, warm, and approachable way.
  • Interest in modern and contemporary art.
  • Experience with Office 365 and video conferencing applications.
  • Able to positively interact with diverse audiences in culturally sensitive ways with a commitment to Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA). 
  • Show a high degree of responsibility, punctuality, and accountability in shifts and training.
  • Ability to use good judgment and work congenially and productively with museum staff, visitors, and volunteers.
  • Flexible hours on occasion; including weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to provide tours for up to four hours at a time.
  • Bilingual candidates are a plus.
