Job Summary:

 

In collaboration with the band director, the drumline instructor is responsible for the planning and instruction of the high school’s drumline students. The instructor prepares appropriate music and rehearses the ensemble for independent performances in accordance with the school curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach all high school and middle school drumline classes
  • Disciple students in a Christ-centered environment
  • Work with the school’s band director during auditions and provide input into the placement of students on particular instruments of the drumline
  • Instruct high school percussion students in essential rudimental skills and techniques
  • Teach a solid repertoire of cadences for performances at games, pep rallies, and the Homecoming parade
  • Re-write or adjust parts to accommodate the playing level of all students
  • Teach simple marching techniques for parade performance
  • Attend all rehearsals, sectionals, and performances (typically 5 football games, 2 pep rallies, the Homecoming parade, and 5 basketball games)
  • Assist the drumline during pep band rehearsals with the Symphonic Band
  • Choreograph simple routines to be performed at halftime shows
  • Maintain inventories of percussion equipment, supplies, and materials
  • Adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for student use
  • Other duties as assigned by the band director

Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

  • Prior experience working with middle and high school students in an educational setting
  • Strong background in percussion performance
  • Strong musical literacy skills
  • Experience in the various sub-groups of the percussion section (i.e. snare, bass, tenors, mallets, auxiliary, etc.)
  • Ability to inspire students, build enthusiasm and love of the subject
  • Ability to tune and replace drumheads and do minor repairs on drumline equipment
  • Seek to model Christ in attitude, speech, and actions
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and exercise good judgment in making decisions
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, administrators, and community members in a professional manner
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Working Conditions:

 

  • Indoor Environment:
    • The work is generally performed in an office setting, often with controlled temperature, lighting, and ventilation.  
  • Regular Office Hours:
    • Office jobs typically follow standard working hours, often from 7:30 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Technology Use:
    • Work typically involves using computers, phones, and other office equipment, such as printers, scanners, or copiers.
