Friends of Eastern Neck (FOEN) partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and our local community to preserve and support Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Rock Hall, MD. FOEN efforts include hands-on volunteer service at the Refuge and educational programs for children and adults. They also participate in environmental initiatives and assist with infrastructure maintenance and improvements to enhance the visitor experience. Their two signature projects on the island are the operation of the Gift Shop and Bookstore in the historic Lodge and the volunteer-maintained Butterfly Garden. FOEN, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the state of Maryland, is one of many Friends groups around the country helping sustain the National Wildlife Refuge System. We currently have 300 members.
The intern will be working on improving the kiosk display at the Eastern Neck butterfly garden. The current display is faded and outdated. Species lists of the common butterflies inhabiting the garden need to be updated to create a poster style display with color pictures, as well as scientific and common names. The intern will create a similar display for the major pollinator plants that are currently in the garden. Both the plant and butterfly poster will eventually be placed in the current kiosk once approved by US Fish and Wildlife managers.
The intern map also assist the Friends volunteers during scheduled educational field trips for Rock Hall Elementary school students and help with annual replanting activities in the garden. Depending on time availability brochures for people to use as they work through the garden may be developed based on the butterfly garden poster.
