The Center for Environment & Society (CES) is looking for two to three motivated interns to participate in habitat restoration and management activities associated with the Natural Lands Project (NLP) as well as the College's River and Field Campus (RAFC). Duties will include a variety of physical tasks to improve early successional habitat to benefit wildlife. Tasks will vary week to week, but most of the work will include:
- Shrub and tree planting
- Nonchemical invasive plant control
- Reseeding existing meadow projects
- Tree shelter maintenance
- Growing native wildflowers from seed for future restoration efforts
- Landowner engagement through site visits and sapling giveaway
Those students interested in field biology, wildlife conservation, habitat restoration, invasive species management, and general ecosystem function will find this a relevant and rewarding experience. Interns will work outside alongside CES staff on RAFC, as well as on private and public properties on the Eastern Shore. Because this work is largely dependent on the weather and season, internship hours may vary from week to week, with no more than 10 hours per week. Internship schedules will be developed to match the applicant's and our staff's available hours, so 4 hour windows are preferable. While most of the work will be outside and physically demanding, there will be opportunities to take advantage of educational opportunities, such as webinars on topics relevant to ecology.
