Washington College is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Campus Garden intern to lead our campus garden team. The ideal candidate will coordinate ecological and community wellness initiatives with campus organizations in promotion of human health and environmental resilience.
The Campus Garden Intern practices a level of independence and collaboration with involved organizations and volunteers to inspire healthy communities through the practice of permaculture.
Earth Care:
- Grow an edible classroom and wildlife sanctuary that conveys a sense of tranquility, environmental renewal, and cultural reinvention.
- Oversee the care of the soil food web, garden plantings, and gathering spaces to ensure safety and community access in the space.
People Care:
- Provide continuity in programming and community engagement by aligning the efforts of the Garden Club, Chicken Council, Compost Club, Master Gardeners, and volunteers.
- Promote clear communications and helpful accommodations relating to use of the garden space for students, faculty, staff and community members.
Fair Share:
- Reconnect people with historical foodways and future food resources that support environmental resilience.
- Promote opportunities to celebrate garden abundance through educational programs and campus traditions, cooking and herbal demonstrations, and produce donations.
Visible Structures:
- Showcase low-impact, sustainable technology using natural and salvaged materials for cooking, food processing, teaching and learning spaces, and recreation.
- Keep the garden sheds organized to encourage access, safety, and thrift.
Invisible Structures:
- Help clubs using the Campus Garden prepare organized budgets that support overall goals for the space; encourage collaborations
- Explore new directions for partnerships with the Campus Garden on campus and in the community.
Animals:
- Arrange for care of the chicken flock during the academic year; plan faculty and staff care during seasonal breaks when students are away
- Support the spring beekeeping course and related workshops involving hive products such as honey, candles, and herbal salves.
