The Principal Design Engineer is the key technical interface with the OEM, customer, and manufacturing/product development teams where they manage all technical aspects of product development and improvements.  This individual will work with a cross-functional team to develop technical roadmaps and execute design concepts both internally and externally with our internal manufacturing capabilities, supply chain and customer interfaces.

The Principal Design Engineer reviews all technical documents and processes with the Technical Review Board for completeness, compliance, cost effectiveness, and manufacturability to ensure efficient, timely, cost-effective, and accurate completion of finished products.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as an engineering and design project focal by creating new designs and improving existing designs through engineering principles including calculations and stress analysis.
  • Chairs the Rhinestahl technical review board, along with other key stakeholders.       
  • Participates as a key team member in new and existing product strategy development and design to recommend technical solutions to grow and capture market share.
  • Provide trouble shooting expertise to assist team in identifying root cause corrective actions to design and manufacturing issues.
  • Manage product configuration management process to ensure consistency of product’s performance and alignment to its design and intended use.
  • Review jobs/projects for process improvement opportunities as well as consolidation.
  • Support Quality Department in identifying and resolving design/engineering non-conformances.
  • Provide technical advisement to suppliers and customers, as required, to fulfill specifications of customer design requirements.
  • Determine root causes of design failures using statistical/engineering methods and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods.
  • Review product designs for manufacturability and prepare quotes if necessary.
  • Engage cross functionally with operations and quality engineers to improve quality control.
  • Perform other duties and specific projects as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Aviation related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of how to produce models/drawings based on customer statements of work, sketches, electronic images, and verbal concepts.
  • Working knowledge of Configuration Management
  •  
  • 10+ years of prior experience in customer facing roles, product/project management, and/or manufacturing engineering.
  • Working knowledge of SOLIDWORKS, SOLIDWORKS PDM and/or Unigraphics/Siemens NX.
  • Experience using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), including a working knowledge of Ansys simulation software for electromechanical designs.
  • 3-D Printing and Prototyping Knowledge.
  • Ability to design/model and produce detailed drawings from the designs and models produced.
  • Highest standards of integrity, loyalty, honesty, moral and ethical values.
  • Demonstrated experience in accurately communicating customer needs to ensure organizational capability.
  • Strong customer service attitude.
  • Technical expertise with software development, electrical, and hydro-mechanical systems a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
