Fieldpiece Instruments is hiring a strategic and innovative Director of Upstream Marketing to lead a high-performing team of Product Managers and Market Research Analysts and answer the critical business question: What should we build, and why?

 

Focused on market intelligence, product strategy, customer discovery, and innovation planning, you will be responsible for developing actionable insights and clear product roadmaps that guide R&D and influence our go-to-market success. Ideal candidates bring experience leading upstream marketing efforts in engineering-driven environments—preferably in tools, instruments, or electronics—and a passion for delivering meaningful customer value.  This position requires up to 30% travel.

What You’ll Do

 

  • Develop and execute upstream marketing strategies aligned with Fieldpiece’s innovation roadmap and growth targets.
  • Shape and evolve the product portfolio strategy in collaboration with the leadership, innovation, and engineering teams.
  • Dive deep into market research and competitive analysis to distill customer needs, key industry trends, and emerging opportunities. Build strong, direct relationships with customers to gain firsthand insights and ensure our products exceed their expectations.
  • Prioritize product features based on data, strategic fit, and expected value to customers.
  • Incorporate insights and opportunities from both the U.S. and international markets (especially EMEA) into product strategy and planning.
  • Ensure the innovation pipeline reflects both near-term wins and long-term strategic bets.
  • Define world-class pricing, positioning, and value propositions that set our products apart as industry leaders – delivering unmatched value and excellence to our customers. Drive strategic adjustments with urgency.
  • Ensure that customer needs are clearly communicated across the organization before development begins.
  • Lead and mentor a team of product managers and market analysts, fostering a culture of curiosity, ownership, and performance.
  • Set clear priorities, coach career growth, and build organizational capability in upstream marketing.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Marketing, Business, or related field.  Master’s degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in upstream marketing, product strategy, and/or product management in a technology or engineering-focused company.
  • Demonstrated success in market research, customer segmentation, and product planning.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to develop and present data-driven business cases.
  • Experience working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and sales organizations.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hands-on, customer-driven culture.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 30%.

The California base annual salary range for this role is currently $200,000-225,000 plus bonus.  Pay scales are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of several factors that that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to, job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and pay relative to other team members.
