GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Essential:  Responds to fire, accident, rescue, civil defense, hazardous materials and natural disaster calls to prevent or extinguish fires.  Serves as Emergency Medical Technician.  Rescues victims in life threatening situations. Climbs ladders, ropes, stairs, hills, etc.  Used various manual and power assisted equipment to gain access to and rescue victims.  May be required to perform duties of fire engineer when needed. Lays and connects hose; directs water streams to control or extinguish fires; protects property from fire control damage; cleans hose, tools and other equipment as necessary. Performs inspection and prevention duties.  Assists in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment, including preventive maintenance.  Performs general station maintenance; makes minor repairs; sweeps and mops floors, washes windows, cleans furniture and facilities, paints buildings, etc.  Prepares and maintains accurate records.  Attends training classes; may serve as instructor for some classes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Training and/or Experience:  Graduation from high school or equivalent (G.E.D.).  

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge:  Knowledge of modern firefighting methods and techniques.  Knowledge of highly technical rescue activities.  Knowledge of emergency medical services.  Knowledge of hazardous materials.  Knowledge of fire apparatus, firefighting and rescue equipment. 

Knowledge of geography of the City, including the location of streets and fire hydrants, and the location and interior plans of major buildings.  Knowledge of basic computer skills. Thorough knowledge of departmental policies (SOP’s).  Thorough knowledge of City personnel policies and procedures.

Skills:  Skill in the operation and maintenance of firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue equipment and tools. 

Abilities:  Ability to complete required forms and maintain records.  Ability to respond and act quickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency and hazardous situations.  Ability to perform minor mechanical work, operate and maintain fire vehicles and equipment.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officers, employees and the general public.  Ability to perform fire fighting for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions.

 

SPECIAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:  Valid KY drivers license required.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Availability:  Must be able to respond to calls at all hours.

Instructions:  General.

Processes:  Frequently refines existing methods and develop new techniques, concepts, or programs within established limits.

Review of Work:  Most completed work reviewed by supervisor.

Analytical Requirements:  Decisions based on wide knowledge and application of advanced techniques/concepts are required.

Public/Internal Contact:  Public 50%; internal 50%.

Mental Effort:  Moderate to heavy.

 Interruptions:  Occasional.
