SALARY:                              $70,000-75,000

REPORTS TO:                     Director of Production

 

STATEMENT OF JOB:

Sound Supervisor serves as the leader of the Sound Department responsible for the implementation of sound designs for all Huntington projects with a spirit of excellence and fiscal responsibility. 

Helps to maintain and support sound activities and equipment in all Huntington venues in collaboration with Theatre Operations and Management staff.  Actively manages all Sound Department employees, Sound Run Crew, staff and casual/overhire.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Supervise maintenance of theatrical sound equipment and systems and Assistive Listening and Audio Description systems for Huntington Theatre Company venues.
  • Work with Sound Designers to determine equipment and personnel needs to realize the Sound Design for each production, including playback and reinforcement.  Support execution of the design though collaboration with other production departments and with attendance at technical rehearsals. 
  • Provide sound related rehearsal support and recording support, occasionally engaging outside musicians and offsite studio time.  Facilitate audio production for production archival and streaming recordings.
  • Ensure that the department is adequately staffed with properly trained personnel all necessary staff and crew for production load-in, operation, and strike.  Develops staff skills and efficiency.  May include mentoring students and employees and developing training and cross training plans for staff members.
  • Participates in regular meetings to coordinate production, schedule and other organizational issues with other Production Departments and Huntington Theatre Company staff.
  • Fiscal oversight responsibilities include payroll tracking and approval, budget tracking and reporting for all projects and the department seasonal budget.   Make recommendations for department related upgrades and capital improvements.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.A./B.S. in Audio Engineering/ Sound Design and/or 3-5 years’ experience as a professional theatrical Sound Engineer or Designer, Supervisory experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of contemporary audio technologies.
  • Knowledge of the specific requirements and conventions of theatrical productions including: 
    • standard rigging practices,
    • sound reinforcement and reproduction systems and practices
    • production communication systems. 
    • audio distribution systems and practices,  
    • room acoustics,
    • MIDI for Show Control
    • audio signal processing
    • sound system equalization
    • power distribution systems for audio
    • audio grounding schemes
    • instrument shielding and isolation methods,
  • Qlab programming experience a plus
  • Dante familiarity, Level 1-2 certification a plus
  • Basic understanding of IP networking practices
  • Effective at working independently.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to lead diverse teams. 
  • A progressively proven track record of successfully managing personnel. 
  • Knowledge of budgeting time, funds, and materials are essential.
