Job Summary 

The Optometric Technician works closely with the Optometrist to provide excellent eye care for the health center patients. This position will conduct pretesting and record findings in the EHR; help patients with frame and lens selection and take accurate measurements; order glasses; make and confirm appointments; notify patients when glasses are ready, and provide patients with education on how to care for/clean their glasses. The Op-Tech will also be responsible for maintaining clean equipment and organizing the office environment. 

Qualifications / Requirements 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required 

  • Experience in a healthcare or optical setting is a plus, but not required  

  • Bilingual (preferred but not required) 

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills  

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills  

  • Ability to work as part of a team  

  • Willingness to learn new skills 

  • Passionate about providing good care for our patients   

  • Strong organizational and time management skills 

  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn electronic medical record (EMR) systems

Essential Functions 

  • Conducts preliminary eye tests: Gathers patient medical history, performs visual acuity tests, and documents patient complaints and symptoms accurately. 

  • Performs diagnostic tests: Assists in conducting various eye tests, including visual field tests, retinal imaging, tonometry, and corneal topography under the guidance of the optometrist. 

  • Prepares patients for examinations: Escorts patients to examination rooms, explains procedures, and ensures their comfort throughout the process. 

  • Administers eye drops and medications as instructed by the optometrist. 

  • Assists with contact lens fittings: Provides support during contact lens fittings, instructions on proper lens care, and assists patients in understanding the insertion and removal techniques. 

  • Maintains equipment: via proper cleaning, disinfection calibration and proper shut down  

  • Record-keeping and documentation: Maintains accurate and up-to-date electronic health records (EHR) for each patient encounter. 

  • Educates patients: Provides patients with information on eye care, proper eyewear usage, and answers general inquiries related to vision health. 

  • Supports administrative tasks: Assists with scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage, and managing patient records. 

  • Sterilizes and maintains a clean working environment in examination rooms and the clinic area. 

  • Collaborates with the optometrist and other team members to deliver seamless patient care. 

  • Verifies insurance, benefits, and eligibility. 

  • Maintains the proper patient volume on the doctor’s daily schedule. 

  • Learns and executes, the proper frame and lens selections for patients, utilizing the sliding scale fee schedule and insurance plans.  

  • Orders and dispenses eyewear and maintains an organized optical area. 

  • Properly collects for, and bills, exams and eyewear. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Physical Requirements 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. 

  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping all day, but may also involve long periods of sitting or computer-based work. 

  • This employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 30 pounds. 

  • Must be able to lift, carry and handle equipment, supplies and other work site materials according to position requirements.

· Previous experience in a healthcare or medical setting is recommended; optical or optometric experience is helpful
· Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with a keen attention to detail and accuracy.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills
· Willingness to learn how to use a new and complicated EHR system
