Job Details

Teal Drones - SLC, UT

Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled RF Engineer with deep expertise in wireless communication systems and RF hardware to join our advanced UAV development team. This role will support WRC Wireless, RF2, and Beam Tech initiatives by designing, testing, and optimizing high-performance RF systems integrated into next-generation drones. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience in RF circuit design, antenna integration, and signal analysis for mobile and airborne platforms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • RF System Design & Integration
    • Design and implement RF circuits and subsystems (amplifiers, filters, mixers, etc.) for UAV platforms.
    • Collaborate with the systems team to define RF requirements for WRC Wireless, RF2, and Beam Tech payloads.
    • Select components and develop layout designs with PCB teams for optimal RF performance and thermal management.
    • Integrate RF modules with flight systems, antennas, and telemetry hardware.
  • Testing, Validation & Troubleshooting
    • Conduct RF signal integrity analysis and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.
    • Perform field tests and lab experiments to validate performance in real-world conditions.
    • Use RF testing equipment (VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators) for debug, tuning, and validation.
  • Beamforming & Wireless Protocols
    • Support development and testing of beamforming and MIMO systems for optimized long-range transmission.
    • Assist in integrating communication protocols relevant to RF2 and WRC specs (LTE, 5G, proprietary waveforms).
    • Work with firmware and software teams to calibrate RF front ends and ensure RF link stability in autonomous and remote flight conditions.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration
    • Interface with mechanical and firmware engineers to ensure proper antenna placement, grounding, and shielding.
    • Coordinate with compliance and certification teams to meet FCC, CE, and international RF standards.
    • Participate in system architecture reviews, prototype builds, and deployment planning.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in RF circuit design and wireless communication system development.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools (HFSS, CST, ADS) and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of RF fundamentals: S-parameters, impedance matching, noise figure, gain compression.
  • Hands-on experience with lab RF tools: spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators.
  • Familiarity with RF2 and WRC spectrum bands and usage in unmanned systems.
  • Experience with drones or aerospace systems is a strong plus.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of beamforming and phased-array antenna systems.
  • Experience with low SWaP (size, weight, and power) RF design for airborne platforms.
  • Familiarity with RF testing in flight test environments (range testing, telemetry analysis).
  • Programming/scripting experience (Python, MATLAB) for RF data analysis or test automation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Mix of lab work, field testing, and design engineering.
  • Occasional travel for field trials, flight testing, or client site evaluations.
  • Fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment with a focus on innovation and field reliability.
