Maclay School is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, and student-centered Physical Education Teacher for our Lower School, serving students in Pre-K 3 through 5th Grade. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for physical wellness and movement, and demonstrate a commitment to instilling a lifelong appreciation for physical activity in children of all skill levels.

We are looking for a collaborative and engaging educator who can inspire students, cultivate a joyful and inclusive PE environment, and partner with families and colleagues to support the development of each child’s physical, emotional, and social growth. A growth mindset, love of children, and belief in the power of movement to enhance learning and wellness are essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging instruction in physical fitness, motor skill development, rhythms/dance, and age-appropriate individual, dual, and team sports.

  • Demonstrate, model, and explain fundamental skills, safety practices, sportsmanship, and strategies.

  • Create inclusive PE activities that support students with disabilities and varying physical development levels in accordance with IDEA and ADA standards.

  • Maintain appropriate records, including grades, student assessments, and equipment inventory.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement a balanced and sequential PE curriculum aligned with national standards.

  • Establish a positive, respectful, and orderly learning environment with clear behavior expectations and consistent classroom management.

  • Attend school functions and events, including assemblies, lunch/recess duty, car line supervision, and other supervisory responsibilities.

  • Maintain and ensure safe use of all equipment and facilities.

  • Provide substitute and emergency lesson plans as needed.

  • Actively participate in ongoing professional development relevant to physical education and child development.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to contribute to extracurricular programs, including clubs or athletic coaching (strongly preferred).

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and Division Heads.

 

 

Qualifications

Required Credentials and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Education or a closely related field.

  • Valid Florida Teaching Certificate in Physical Education or a current Statement of Eligibility from the Florida Department of Education.

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with early childhood and elementary-aged children in an educational or coaching environment.

  • Proven ability to differentiate instruction and modify activities for students with diverse physical abilities and needs.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community members.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to actively supervise and engage with students in indoor and outdoor physical education settings.

  • Frequent walking, running, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, and reaching throughout the school day.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Sufficient physical stamina to lead classes, model athletic activity, and manage recess or playground environments.

  • Adequate visual and auditory acuity to ensure student safety and deliver instruction effectively.

  • Work occurs primarily in gymnasiums, athletic fields, and outdoor spaces; weather exposure is frequent.

  • Occasional after-school and weekend commitments for events or supervision may be required.
