JOB TITLE:                                            MATERIAL HANDLER

DEPARTMENT NAME:                       FURNISH PREP

 

Job Description & Duties:

Work with fellow crew members, under the leadership of the Beaterman, to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the Furnish Prep Area.

 

The Material Handler role is responsible for the preparation, movement, and organization of recycled fiber materials used in paper production. This role includes unloading incoming paper, supporting pulper operation, and maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

 

  • Equipment Operation & Process Control:
    • Unload and properly stack incoming furnish using forklifts; ensure all bales have proper ID tags.
    • Sweep trailers thoroughly once unloaded.
    • Feed raw material into pulpers conveyor belts via forklift as per production recipe by removing bale wires, plastic wrap, and other packaging materials.
    • Inspect incoming recycled paper materials for contaminants or damage and remove irregularities prior to pulping.
    • Complete plastic bails by monitoring fullness, securing bale wires, wrapping plastic, and transporting with forklift to designated areas.
  • Quality Control & Record-Keeping:
    • Use the daily fiber report to determine storage locations for furnish.
    • Track material usage via bail tags and maintain inventory logs.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Perform and complete a daily forklift inspection checklist.
    • Identify and report any equipment defects or maintenance needs immediately to Furnish Prep Supervisor and Maintenance.
    • Ensure cleanliness and organization of both furnish prep floor, docking area, and inside trailers.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow all mill and department safety protocols, including operation of equipment and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Understand the hazards to work safely and responsibly.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the pulper area to ensure a safe working environment.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in forklift operation preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and follow instructions effectively.
  • Ability to stay individually motivated in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety procedures and operational flow.

 

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced, industrial settign with exposure to npoise, moving eqipment, and debris.
  • Work in a production facility exposed to cold, heat, and humidity.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
