The Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is seeking a creative, energetic, and community focused Youth Services Librarian or Specialist at the Bowie Branch, located right next door to a high school! This is an exciting opportunity to connect directly with teens and young adults, fostering a welcoming and inclusive library environment that supports learning, creativity, and personal growth. 

 
 

 

As the head of the Youth Services Department, you will supervise staff, manage daily branch operations, and develop engaging programs and collections that respond to the unique needs of our teen and young adult community. The position also includes serving as person in charge when needed, ensuring customer and staff safety, and contributing to systemwide initiatives.

 
 

 

Essential Duties:

  • Lead teen services and outreach by building strong partnerships with the local high school and youth organizations.
  • Plan and deliver engaging programs for teens and young adults, such as book clubs, maker activities, college/career readiness workshops, and teen advisory boards.
  • Cultivate a welcoming teen space that encourages reading, creativity, and social connection.
  • Engage teen volunteers and encourage youth participation in library initiatives.
  • Manage and develop the teen and young adult collection to ensure it’s diverse, current, and exciting.
  • Oversee daily branch operations and supervise staff, including training, scheduling, performance evaluation, and professional development.
  • Provide reference, advisory, and technology support to customers.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for teens and the community.
  • Represent the library in outreach activities with schools, organizations, and agencies.
  • ​Manage the circulation services desk as needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed. 

Qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and a Maryland Professional Public Librarian certificate with three years of professional experience; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with a Maryland State Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) certificate and five years of professional experience.
  • Three years of supervisory experience required.
  • Strong passion and proven experience working with teens and young adults.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and community outreach skills.
  • Strong knowledge of teen literature, trends, and emerging technologies. 
  • Preferred familiarity with maker spaces, creative technologies, or gaming resources.
  • Must be able to earn 90 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every five years.
  • ​​​​Flexibility to substitute at other branches and participate in special projects.

  • Telework 1–2 days per week after a successful six month probationary period, based on branch needs.
