Director of Communications

 

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church is seeking a highly skilled and creative Director of Communications to lead and shape the Conference’s communications strategy. The Communications Director is the chief storyteller for the Mountain Sky Annual Conference utilizing diverse methods to promote and share the mission and ministry of the Annual Conference. The ideal candidate will bring strong administrative, innovative, and implementation skills, along with expertise in engagement, a passion for storytelling, and strategic communication. This is a full-time position, primarily remote, based in the Denver, CO area.

 

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church serves the people of Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and part of Idaho, guided by values of accountability, inclusivity, collaboration, and transparency.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive communications strategy in collaboration with the Bishop, Conference leadership and the communications team that ensure consistent and high-quality messaging for programs and initiatives supporting the vision and strategic priorities of the Mountain Sky Annual Conference.
  • Serve as the Conference’s primary spokesperson for public and media relations, fostering relationships externally with local media, internally with local churches, districts, and office staff, and connectionally with United Methodist denominational partners.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent brand identity across all communication channels, ensuring alignment with the Conference’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Monitor and assess communication efforts, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Lead the Conference and local churches in adopting and leveraging new and emerging communication technologies to enhance ministry and engagement.
  • Lead the conference in crisis communications response, ensuring timely responses and supporting leadership in critical situations.
  • Provide guidance, training, and resources for conference, district and local church leaders, helping them implement best practices and effectively communicate within their congregations and communities.
  • Oversee and maintain the Conference website and social media channels, creating and distributing compelling content, including articles, graphics, videos, and posts across all digital and print platforms.
  • Supervise and help equip and coordinate the work of the communications team and volunteers.
  • Assist in guiding how the Conference budget and benevolences are communicated and understood.
  • Manage and share Conference communications, ensuring inclusive messaging, while preparing and distributing news releases, updates, and relevant information from General, Conference, District, and Local Church sources.
  • Oversee the distribution of communications for annual conference sessions, and conference events before, during, and after the event.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications or a related field is required. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with demonstrated success in communications.
  • Must possess exceptional writing, copy-editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Photography and basic videography skills, including editing and production using tools like Premiere Pro and Photoshop.
  • Graphic design proficiency using Adobe Suite, Canva, and other emerging technologies.
  • Experience in leadership and communication in multi-cultural and diverse environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage deadlines effectively.
  • Strong interviewing skills and the ability to craft compelling narratives.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the United Methodist structure is helpful.

 

Additional Considerations:

  • Hybrid schedule, with the expectation of in-office presence on designated days.
  • Occasional travel and evening or weekend commitments are expected.
  • $80,000 - $90,000 per year.
