Description

The Financial Counselor II plays a key role in revenue cycle process by providing patients with financial guidance, facilitating payment options, and managing advanced account recovery efforts. Under the direction of Patient Financial Services leadership, this role ensures that patients understand their financial obligations while identifying and coordinating financial assistance opportunities.

In addition to performing standard financial counseling duties, the Financial Counselor II takes on an expanded role in training, education, and advanced collections management. This position is responsible for mentoring Financial Counselors, overseeing complex account resolutions, and working closely with collection agencies to maximize recovery efforts.

This position requires independent judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to plan, schedule, and manage multiple financial tasks that directly impact hospital and physician reimbursement.

Licenses and Certifications Required

  • None

Educational Requirements

  • Associate degree in business, healthcare, or related field preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in billing, collections, or financial counseling within a healthcare environment required.
  • 2+ years of customer service experience in healthcare required.
  • 2+ years of experience in account recovery, collections management, or financial assistance programs preferred.
  • Proficiency with insurance billing, reimbursement processes, and patient financial assistance programs is a plus.
  • Experience training or mentoring staff in a financial services role is a plus.

Special Skills or Training Requirements

  • Proficiency in hospital billing systems, payor portals, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong knowledge of insurance terminology, reimbursement processes, and financial assistance eligibility.
  • Ability to interpret and apply collection regulations while maintaining compassionate patient communication.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills to support staff training and advanced account resolution.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and make informed financial decisions.
