Summary of Purpose:
Provides health services to animals in KHS care, ensuring compassionate and effective care.
Duties (Essential Functions):
Provide daily care, cleanliness, and enrichment to animals in care and maintain common areas.
- Responsible for daily cleaning and sanitation of assigned animal and common areas with emphasis on disease control protocols; provide spot cleaning of animal areas throughout work schedule.
- Provide all animals with appropriate housing, bedding, food, and water.
- Provide animals with daily enrichment and mental stimulation including in kennel toys and food enrichment, walks for adult dogs, social interaction with humans, and (where appropriate) interactions with members of own species.
- Gain and maintain knowledge of all common shelter diseases and other animal illnesses to be able to identify their symptoms, transmission, and prevention including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Clean animal cages as needed to create appropriate space for incoming animals.
- Assist with other shelter duties as time allows due to no-show appointments or transport cancellations.
Process incoming animals following KHS Admissions policies.
- Sign in new animals (owned and transfers), handle KHS alumni returns, and follow stray animal intake protocol.
- Evaluate incoming animals’ health and behavior to determine best shelter placement and next steps in shelter process.
- Provide medical work-up on all animals as designated by KHS veterinarian including but not limited to initial health exam, vaccinating, blood draws for diagnostic testing, and microchipping.
- Accurately document animal intake, medical information, and movement of animals in PetPoint software system.
- Responsible for processing Return to Owners when animals are reclaimed.
Provide professional, compassionate, stellar customer services to all who visit, call, volunteer, donate or work for KHS.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public including scheduled owners, “walk in” clients, finders/good Samaritans, and volunteers.
- Assist “walk in” clients as efficiently as possible while maintaining KHS Admissions and pet retention policies.
- Effectively communicate with the Veterinarian and Vet Services team regarding health concerns seen on initial examinations.
- Communicate with supervisor on duty regarding unusual activities, significant problems or concerns.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Manage daily Admissions/Intake schedule using Acuity and Airtable software programs.
- Maintain inventory of admissions department medical supplies.
