Summary: 

The Senior Staff Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial health and integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing day-to-day accounting operations, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements. The Senior Staff Accountant will collaborate closely with the Controller and program directors to provide insight into financial performance and support the Organization’s mission-driven goals. 

 

Principal Responsibilities: 

 

General Accounting and Financial Reporting 

  • Prepare and maintain journal entries, and monthly reconciliations 

  • Assist in preparation of financial statements including variance analysis. 

  • Ensure financial records comply with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. 

  • Perform monthly close activities including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll. 

Budgeting & Forecasting 

  • Support annual budget preparation and assist departments with budget tracking. 

  • Monitor expenditures and revenues against budget. 

  • Assist with forecasting and financial modeling as needed. 

Grants & Restricted Funds 

  • Track and report on restricted donations and grant funding. 

  • Ensure proper expense allocation of grant programs and funder requirements. 

  • Support grant audits and financial reporting to funders. 

Compliance & Audit 

  • Assist in preparing schedules and reports for annual audit and Form 990 filing. 

  • Document and support internal controls and recommend improvements. 

  • Assist in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. 

 

 

Work Environment:  

Office environment is located within HARP’s shelter facilities.  The employee will primarily work in an office setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

  

 

Physical Demands:  

Incumbent may be exposed to hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches, and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases. Individual will be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to read, see, hear, and speak. Incumbent will be required to use a computer with keyboard, telephone, or handheld mobile device for extended periods of time, and office machinery as needed. Travel: 

This position will require working out of HARP’s North Shore and/or East End locations.  

Qualifications

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required. 

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting. 

  • Strong understanding of fund accounting, grants management, and GAAP. 

  • Experience working with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online)
