Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach more than 1,400 individuals every day across 9 campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019. Our current team is more than 230 team members.
PHILANTHROPY OVERVIEW
- Private philanthropy will provide $9.6 million (42%) of Roof Above’s $22.7 million in revenue in FY26 (government contracts and rental income are other primary revenue sources).
- Roof Above deeply values a relational approach to fundraising. We currently anticipate more than half of our dollars raised (53%) will come from individual donors, with corporations (22%), foundations (19%), and congregations (6%) each playing a key role.
- The Philanthropy team is comprised of 16 team members (inclusive of Chief Philanthropy Officer) and is responsible for fundraising, communications, and volunteerism.
- Roof Above utilizes the Virtuous software for our donor information management.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Philanthropy Officer has the primary responsibility of ensuring Roof Above has the philanthropic resources needed to carry out our mission. Working in close partnership with the CEO this position is charged with developing and executing the strategy to generate nearly $10M/annually needed in private fundraising to sustain our operations. Beyond fundraising, this position also oversees communications and volunteerism functions, ensuing all three functions are aligned to engage and inspire the community to support our mission.
Roof Above’s Chief Philanthropy Officer serves as a key organizational leader and as a member of Roof Above’s Executive Team, helping make key decisions and shaping critical communications for the organization. In addition, this role serves as the key staff liaison to the board’s fundraising work and attends Board meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Strategy: Develop and lead the strategy that will support the growing financial needs of the organization for annual operating, as well as special fundraising campaigns, such as capital campaigns. Strategy should be both data-driven and be rooted in our value of relationships.
Philanthropy Leadership: Lead the philanthropy team to ensure team shares a common vision, leverages strengths to achieve goals and has the proper procedures and policies in place. The philanthropy team’s work primary divides into three key buckets.
- Fundraising: Ensure appropriate donor cultivation, stewardship, and communication that matches Roof Above core values, as well as appropriate donor data processes and management to support these goals. Fundraising will include events, appeals, grants, major donor cultivation, planned-giving, corporate & faith community giving and designated campaigns.
- Community Engagement/Volunteerism: Ensure aligned outreach to the community to share about our work and invite community to participate in our mission. Support a variety of means to invite the community to be part of our work through individual and group volunteer activities that align with our core values and mission.
- Communications: Ensure Roof Above “voice” is clear and mission-aligned. This includes everything from social media and news media to donor-targeted communications. In addition, the philanthropy team is responsible for education and advocacy efforts of Roof Above, in close collaboration with the CEO and executive team.
Donor Relationships: This position will be responsible for a portfolio of key major donors.
Organizational Leadership: As a member of the Roof Above executive leadership team, the Chief Philanthropy Officer is a key steward of Roof Above’s mission and organizational culture.
Supervision: The Chief Philanthropy Officer oversees a high performing department of 15 team members including 6 direct reports (Community Engagement Officers, Development Officer, Director of Communications, Director of Philanthropy Operations, and Senior Development Officer).
