Music Therapist

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Music Therapist is responsible for providing a broad range of clinical services to patients at Moody Neuro including implementing a comprehensive Music Therapy program. This includes assessing and treating the effects of illness or disability for improved functioning and independence in the cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral and physical domains. The Music Therapist programs and implements activities addressing goals; serves as an interdisciplinary treatment team member; coordinates efforts with other therapy team members; attends treatment team and weekly staff meetings; and completes discharge planning. The Music Therapist is responsible for providing written documentation and verbal communication regarding services in a timely, organized, and clear manner. The Music Therapist develops and maintains relationships with other professionals and community agencies. The Music Therapist upholds the mission, philosophy and goals of the organization while maintaining strict confidentiality of personnel and patient data and information in the performance of assigned duties.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Completes a Music Therapy assessment and provides a written summary of evaluation.
• Provides verbal feedback to patient, family, referral source, and others involved in the care of the patient regarding results of the evaluation and recommendations.
• Develops appropriate treatment goals; writes treatment plan as appropriate.
• Delivers a variety of appropriate Music Therapy activities which fulfill a patient’s social, cognitive, language, emotional, and physical needs and interests in both individual and group format.
• Maintains accurate records of each therapy session and monthly progress.
• Develops, implements, and coordinates specialized program activities.
• Communicates patient’s progress to the team during weekly rounds and as needed through written and verbal exchanges.
• Communicates results of patient’s progress during monthly IPP meetings with family, patient, payee source, and team.
• Completes discharge paperwork and make appropriate referrals in accordance with Moody Neuro policy.
• Follows and implements behavioral contract guidelines as needed.
• Assists in the day to day operation of the Music/Speech Department.
• Develops and maintain relationships with peers, professional and community contacts.
• Works directly with all departments in an effort to address patient’s music therapy needs.
• Supervises and evaluates Music Therapy Interns (as needed).
• Attends department and Moody Neuro staff meetings.
• Participates in process improvement activities as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned which may include (but not limited to) providing leisure skills screenings and activities which may be provided on or off-campus.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in music therapy principles / techniques and psychology.

Proficient in accompanying self and others on a variety of instruments.

Proficient in playing/singing a variety of traditional, fork, and popular songs.

Demonstrates knowledge of the potentials, limitations and problems of individuals following acquired brain injury.

Demonstrates knowledge of existing music therapy methods, techniques, materials and equipment and their appropriate application.

Demonstrates knowledge of principles and methods for evaluating the effects of music therapy.

Conducts music therapy assessments and treatments; communicates these findings and recommendations in written and verbal forms.

Selects or creates music therapy experiences that meet the patient’s goals and objectives.

Accepts supervision.

Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.

Possess good interpersonal skills.

Willingness to acquire necessary licensing, registration, and certification.

Implements and evaluates music therapy program.

Recognizes, interprets and responds appropriately to significant events in music therapy sessions as they occur.

Ability to be flexible and work as part of a team.

Ability to work independently and in a professional manner.

General knowledge of computers.

Ability to communicate diagnostic results, treatment plans, and recommendations through both written and verbal communication.

Ability to relate well to individuals with disabilities.

Demonstrates NCI abilities and knowledge by successfully passing course, maintaining refresher courses as determined by NCI committee as well as implementing the knowledge with patients as needed.

Maintains CPR certification by successfully passing course and refresher courses as needed per policy.

Current valid Texas Driver’s License.

Education:

Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Therapy with Neurologic Music Therapy Certification. Licensed by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Experience:

Prefer one year's experience with adults with brain injuries.

Obtaining impressions through the eyes of the shape, size, distance, motion, color or other characteristics of objects with or without adaptive devices. The major visual functions are: Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.

Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Depth perception - three-dimensional vision. The ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are they actually are.

Field of vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while the eyes are fixed on a given point.

Accommodation - adjustment of the lens of the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from the eye.

Color vision - the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
