Description

The Sports & Racquets Director plays a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of the Detroit Athletic Club’s Sports and Racquet programming, ensuring the smooth operation, innovation, and growth of all related activities. This leadership position is responsible for organizing and supervising racquet sports events, social gatherings, exhibitions, tournaments, clinics, camps, group and private lessons. In addition to managing racquet teams, the Director is also charged with driving the overall development and coordination of broader sports initiatives across the Club, fostering a dynamic and engaging environment for members of all ages and skill levels.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sports Manager Supervision: Oversee the Sports Manager responsible for day-to-day operations, scheduling, facility maintenance, and member service.
     
  • Sports Pro Supervision: Oversee Squash Pro, Pickleball Pro, Golf Pro and anyfuture additions providing services to our Members
     
  • Activity Coordination: Plan, coordinate, and execute various activities including but not limited to squash, pickleball, racquetball, handball, and various sports/
    activities.

     
  • Facility Management: Provide oversight for designated facilities within your area, including full coordination of the CPP and all related components.
     
  • Event Management: Organize events such as social gatherings, exhibitions, tournaments, and other competitive fixtures to engage members and foster community spirit.
     
  • Instructional Programs: Develop and oversee instructional programs including clinics, camps, group lessons, and personalized private lessons to cater to individuals of all skill levels.
     
  • Team Oversight: Assist in managing teams, facilitating their participation in leagues, competitions, and interclub matches, while fostering team cohesion and sportsmanship. Maintain Pro Shop/ inventory.
     
  • Program Growth Initiatives: Spearhead initiatives aimed at expanding the reach and appeal of sports within the DAC, attracting new members, and retaining existing ones.
     
  • Collaboration and Networking: Foster partnerships and collaborations with external organizations, sponsors, and stakeholders to enhance the visibility and success of sports and racquet-related activities.
     
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the delivery of high-quality instruction, facilities, and services, maintaining standards of excellence across all aspects of the racquets program/sports programs.
     
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage budgets for the sports and racquets program, allocating resources effectively to achieve program goals while ensuring financial sustainability. 
     
  • Staff Development: Provide leadership, guidance, and training to staff members within the racquets/sports program, nurturing a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Annually review and evaluate employees under his/her supervision for the purpose of attaining and maintaining performance and efficiency. Will review with the employee being evaluated all areas, both positive and negative, pertaining to their performance. Will work to insure all employees continue professional and personal growth.

As a leader at the Detroit Athletic Club and a member of the Executive Athletics Team, you are expected to model DAC values through your actions, decisions, and interactions. This includes fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You play a vital role in supporting departmental goals, championing club-wide initiatives, and contributing to strategic planning efforts. Your leadership extends beyond day-to-day operations, as you are also responsible for mentoring staff, enhancing member experiences, and driving innovation across programs and services.

This includes collaborating with other leaders within Athletics to enhance offerings, facilities, and engagement across all sports, with the overarching goal of promoting health, wellness, and community involvement. Active engagement in cross-departmental communication and problem-solving is essential to ensuring the success of the broader Athletic Department and the Club as a whole.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation, or related field (preferred).
  • Extensive experience in racquet sports instruction, coaching, or administration.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and problem-solve effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Passion for racquet sports and a commitment to promoting active lifestyles and community engagement.
