Part-time Assistant Sports Editor
The Post and Courier, the premier news source in South Carolina, is seeking a part-time assistant sports editor to work with our Charleston-based team to edit and coordinate coverage.
You will work closely with the sports editor and our writers to develop coverage and publication plans for our digital and print products. You must be a strong editor who knows the production side of a sports operation and understands how to build a compelling sports report for our audience.
The position requires someone who is organized, collaborative and communicates well with colleagues across the sports department as well as other departments that interact daily sports, in particular our audience team and designers.

While much of the local news industry is struggling against significant headwinds, The Post and Courier is growing. We’re based in Charleston but have expanded throughout the state with newsrooms in Beaufort County (Hilton Head), Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg, Florence and York County (Charlotte suburbs).
We will consider candidates who must work remotely.
Duties:
- Collaborate with the sports editor and reporters to develop coverage plans and edit content for daily products on multiple platforms.
- Be audience-centric. Ideal candidates will have an understanding of digital best practices that help drive readership at postandcourier.com, as well as subscriber growth and strong engagement with our sports content.
- Be committed to growing The Post and Courier’s presence with sports content.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and a team-first attitude.
- Enforce deadlines, both for breaking and enterprise stories.
- Edit stories for grammar, clarity, style, accuracy and adherence to AP style.
- Monitor and respond to any breaking sports news (fairly rare)
- Help compile roundup reports from AP, press releases and/or box scores from local minor league and college teams.
