 SEIU Local 2015 Job Description

Purpose:

SEIU Local 2015 is California’s leading long term care organization dedicated to providing and protecting quality care for some of our most vulnerable residents.  SEIU Local 2015 represents 600,000 plus in-home care providers and nursing home workers throughout California, making it the largest union of long term caregivers in California and the second largest SEIU Local in the nation.  Geographically, we live and work in forty-nine different counties and we speak over nine core languages.  The Industry Director oversees the day to day operations of the Department, coordinating the work of staff assigned to the Department.  The Department is responsible for taking escalations from the  Member Action Center; housing and promoting the Local’s various benefit programs; the Union’s Elinor Glenn Scholarship Program; processing member Health and Welfare requests; conducting various Orientations and Trainings; developing servicing related training curriculum for statewide Field staff, as well as training those staff in said trainings; provide service related advice to staff and member leaders; coordinating all membership cancellation efforts; and signing up represented workers for membership and COPE, through the department’s various touchpoints.  Industry Director works closely with union officers, union staff of Regions and other departments to reach the department’s and Union’s organizational goals. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director’s primary responsibility managing the development, implementation, and enhancement of Department systems, strategies, and technologies.  This responsibility also consists of developing strategic plans for communication and management of performance objectives. The Director executes the vision for the operation, insuring the meeting of Department goals.  The Director is continually engaged in leading and inspiring the team in developing and documenting best practices in the performance of all duties and responsibilities.

The Industry Director duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the position:

  1. Build and implement strategy to meet department and organizational goals
  2. Create or update Industry policies and procedures, and communicate with internal & external entities.
  3. Design and implement planning activities that ensure a successful operation.
  4. Develop, manage and motivate a strong, staff team
  5. Forecast industry trends.
  6. Oversee the design and delivery of training programs.
  7. Serve as a liaison between Industry and stakeholders to provide policies and procedures and training for department to effectively and efficiently provide service to those we represent.
  8. Ensure Industry staff understand and comply with all department and organizational objectives, performance standards, and policies.
  9. Monitor and evaluate Staff performance, providing learning or coaching opportunities, and taking correction action, if necessary.
  10. Prepare reports and analyze data to inform the union’s management team and officers of goals and outcomes of the department’s charge.

Required Competencies:

  • Experience in developing, evaluating and implementing comprehensive campaign plans within established deadlines.
  • Experience in getting into details of systems and processes
  • Experience in exercising independent judgement on behalf of key stakeholders.
  • Effective at building productive relationships with Regions, other Departments, as well as entities outside of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and work with diverse internal and external communities.
  • Team building, coaching, problem analysis, and conflict resolution with internal team mates and external partners.  
  • Exhibit the ability to demonstrate SEIU Local 2015 core values.
  • Demonstrated competency in organizing and representational work including a basic knowledge of related labor laws and regulations related to the organizing and representation of workers. (Ex. NLRA, FLSA, PERA)
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace and foster innovation into their work and within their teams that helps improve efficiencies and execute towards organizational goals.
  • Highly competent in using Microsoft Office, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Also demonstrates the willingness to harness the power of social media to help execute the work of the organization

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science/Arts degree or higher or equivalent work experience preferred,
  • Minimum of 3 years representational/servicing work
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience,
  • Effective leadership and analytical skills including working knowledge of delivering services to a membership base
  • Exceptional ability to develop and manage results-oriented recruiting and training programs
  • Strong mentoring and relationship building skills with ability to effectively manage group and interpersonal conflict situations
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills – including statistical report writing
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Power Point, with advanced Excel skills

Physical Requirements:

Work is generally performed in an office setting, but can entail some travel, and field work.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

The Industry Director reports directly to the Statewide Deputy Director or designee.
