Purpose:
SEIU Local 2015 believes that its members and leaders are the center of our power critical to the change necessary to improve California communities and the lives of workers. To this end, the Deputy Statewide Field Director (DSFD), is central to the execution of Local 2015’s mission, vision, and core strategies.
Position Summary:
The Deputy Statewide Field Director (DSFD) of SEIU Local 2015 oversees member-related organizing and representational activities. As part of the Field Leadership Team, the Director collaborates in the overall development and implementation of the strategic organizational plan of SEIU Local 2015 in the field.
The Deputy Statewide Field Director for Regions oversees activity related to the Regions and other member strength program areas.
Essential Job Functions:
With support from the Statewide Field Director, the DSFD oversees the development and implementation of Local 2015 strategies/program in the field across the state with the desired outcomes in clear focus.
Regional Directors
- Mentors, Coaches, and develops the strategic and critical thinking of Regional Directors
- Covers for Regional Directors’ vacations and trouble-shooting difficult situations and projects, as needed;
Bargaining & Representation
- Supports RDs to develop industry specific action-based campaigns addressing local and union-wide issues.
- Oversees the Regional implementation of a collective bargaining strategy to achieve more uniform contracts terms and expiration dates in all Local 2015 industries (IHSS, NH, and Private Agency).
Membership & Growth
- In partnership with the Organizing Director and RDs, the Deputy Statewide Field Director oversees the development of specific organizing campaigns for represented and unrepresented workers in the LTC jurisdiction.
- In partnership with the Membership Director and RDs, the Deputy Statewide Field Director oversees the development of strategies and campaigns to meet the local’s membership goals
Legislative, Policy & Strategic Partnerships
- In partnership with the Policy Director, the Political Director, and RDs, Deputy Statewide Field Director oversees member participation in specific campaigns that support the Local’s policy, legislative and electoral work to build power for LTC workers.
- Supports RDs to develop strategic partnerships in their regions, in alignment with the Local’s overall strategic partnership work.
Leadership development
- Oversees Regional Directors and their staffs in developing the leadership of the organization including the design and implementation of campaigns to build organizational leadership identification, recruitment, development, and training.
- Coordinates all membership-based activity (legislative, organizing, political, contract, membership, etc.) for their area with other appropriate staff.
Staff Development
- Identifies learning opportunities, trainings and other staff development needs of supervisory staff and their teams.
- Evaluates and makes recommendations for development of staff, promotions of existing staff or hiring for new recruits, and ensures key positions are filled in a timely manner.
- Problem solves and addresses the work-related concerns of subordinate staff;
Builds Organizational Culture
- Acts as internal agent of change, consistently challenging supervisors, leaders and staff to innovate in their current work to expand the local’s capacity to win on behalf of the members.
- Embraces, support and promotes the organizations’ core values, beliefs and culture including: Local 2015 6 core values, culture of collaboration and team work, becoming an Anti-Racist Organization (ARO) and a culture of learning, accountability and organizing.
Administrative & Budget
- Supports direct reports to develop recommended budgets, allocate resources effectively and plan and implement program activities as appropriate.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated skills in the areas of collective bargaining, training, communication, facilitation, strategic analysis and planning, development and team building.
- Work effectively with members and staff from diverse ethnic, social and economic groups
- Exercise excellent judgment while working under pressure
- Establish and uphold organizational priorities, standards and values
- Manage leadership of multiple teams in multiple/large geographic areas
- Develop, mentor and hold member leaders and staff accountable to expectations
- Work effectively as part of senior field leadership team.
- Track record of meeting outcomes
Experience and Education:
- 8+ years of experience in union or community organizing, campaign coordination and representation
- 5+ years more of supervisory experience leading a team of at least four or more staff
- A strong commitment to building a progressive labor movement through organizing the unorganized.
Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Deputy Statewide Field Director reports directly to the Statewide Field Director. Supervision and direction may change depending on the focus of work.
Working Conditions:
- Willingness and ability to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Must have a valid California driver’s license, reliable use of car for work, and required automobile insurance
- Willingness and ability to travel if required
- Work is generally performed in the field with members and outside constituents.
