Position Overview: 

As the Staff Accountant, you will be responsible for essential accounting functions including month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and processing payroll. This role plays a key part in maintaining accuracy, ensuring compliance, and driving efficiency within the accounting department. Reporting to the Senior Director of Accounting, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to support organizational objectives. The ideal candidate will bring a keen attention to detail, experience in nonprofit accounting, and strong interpersonal skills to foster effective collaboration across departments. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Prepare and post journal entries for general ledger accounts. 

  • Administer and process payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with applicable regulations.  

  • Maintain payroll records and ensure proper documentation for audits and reporting purposes. Support year-end payroll reconciliation. 

  • Partner with the Senior Director of Accounting to establish the month-end close calendar, then oversee the achievement of each milestone. This duty includes rolling-forward restricted asset balances, submitting reports to the National Urban League, reviewing journal entries, etc. 

  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing processes.  

  • Complete bank statement and other financial account reconciliations.  

  • Prepare financial statements and reports.  

  • Assist with financial forecasting and budgeting.  

  • Analyze financial data and provide insight to managers and staff teams.  

  • Serve as a backup to payroll and grants accounting as needed. 

  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of our annual budget. 

  • Maintain, and monitor compliance with our financial policies. 

  • Own all aspects of our tax filings, including Form 990. 

  • Assist with all aspects of our external financial audit and single audit.  

  • Continuously assess our current financial systems and processes and make improvements as needed.  

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software (Financial Edge software experience preferred). 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable non-profit and government-related rules and regulations to ensure compliance. 

  • Exceptional time management and communication skills. 

  • Ability to successfully work on a range of assignments and prioritize evolving tasks. 

 

What you’ll need: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.  

  • At least 3 years of nonprofit accounting experience.  

  • Previous experience processing payroll.  

  • Strong understanding of GAPP.  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software (Financial Edge software experience preferred). 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable non-profit and government-related rules and regulations to ensure compliance. 

  • Proficiency with computers and bookkeeping software, strong typing skills. 

  • Exceptional time management and communication skills. 

  • Ability to successfully work on a range of assignments and prioritize evolving tasks. 

  • Positivity, detail-oriented, excellent multitasking, and organizational ability. 

Working environment: 

The role requires a blend of office-based work and community engagement, including local travel. Activities involve regular computer use, meetings, and presentations, as well as occasional physical tasks such as setting up events.

Salary information: 

The estimated salary for this position starts at $60,000. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.
