Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of experience in local, state or federal government planning, zoning, community development, housing or building inspections, construction, or related field.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the department’s policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of city policies and procedures that relate to assigned job duties.
- Ability to plan, prioritize and handle multiple work assignments and projects.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise discretion in performing assigned job duties.
- Skill in public relations and customer service.
- Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws, standards and regulations relating to various land use, nuisance and public safety codes.
- Knowledge of inspection, investigative and violation correction techniques.
- Knowledge of the planning process, zoning and other land use regulatory and planning mechanisms.
- Skill in reading and interpreting site plans, zoning maps, engineering/architectural drawings, topographic maps and aerial photographs.
- Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field data, and reports.
- Ability to analyze complex situations, problems and data, and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions.
- Ability to comprehend and articulate complex facts and relationships in detail, to summarize and write clearly, concisely legibly and professional manner.
- Ability to produce or obtain reports, graphs, charts, photographs or other evidence or exhibits.
- Ability to handle high stress situations and effectively deal with difficult, angry or threatening people.
