Cincinnati Nature Center is looking for the next nature lover who wants to spread our mission through digital and print formats. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in graphic design with some experience with both digital and print formats. The Nature Center is a place where we love to get outside, we welcome all people and we celebrate biodiversity of our land. 

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Junior Graphic Designer, you will create and manage visual materials for the Cincinnati Nature Center across print and digital formats. This entry-level position is perfect for someone excited to learn, enjoys both print and digital design, and wants to make a meaningful impact through mission-driven creative work. All activities must be executed with the highest safety and customer service standards in alignment with the Cincinnati Nature Center’s Mission, Values, and Principles.

KEY RESPONSBILITIES

  • Assist in designing a wide variety of print materials, including:
    • Quarterly magazine (Newsleaf)
    • Trail maps, brochures, flyers, signage, merchandise packaging
    • Wayfinding and exhibit signage
    • T-shirts, stickers, and promotional materials
  • Support digital design projects such as:
    • Email campaigns (including bi-weekly Now in Nature)
    • Social media content
    • Website content updates and design assets
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and cross-departmental meetings to develop creative concepts
  • Communicate with internal clients, printers, and vendors to manage quotes, production timelines, and print orders
  • Assist with photo editing, light video editing and/or animation (BONUS), and social media content creation
  • Maintain well-organized files, assets, templates, and archives using our established systems
  • Help support branding for internal programs and public-facing events
  • Occasionally assist with onsite setup, photography, and customer service at events
  • Uphold and evolve our visual brand guidelines across all platforms and materials

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related creative field
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365
  • Strong organizational skills, file management, and attention to detail
  • A foundational understanding of typography, layout, and brand strategy
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to learn and take direction while growing creative independence
  • Enthusiasm for nature, conservation, or the mission of Cincinnati Nature Center
  • Communicate effectively and professionally, including oral, written, and listening methods
  • Manage time and multiple priorities to meet deadlines
  • Physical ability to participate in occasional hikes or outdoor work (signage installation, photography, events)
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Exhibit good judgment, honesty, integrity, and responsibility

 

PREFERRED SKILLS (NICE TO HAVE)

  • Experience with print production or communicating with printers
  • Basic understanding of website administration (Webflow, WordPress, Squarespace, or similar)
  • Skills in photography or video editing
  • Basic copywriting or messaging development specifically for marketing materials

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires the following physical activities: pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is primarily onsite, indoors in an office environment, and outdoors in the nature preserve. Occasional remote work is acceptable.
  • Local travel and some travel to regional conferences may be required. When a Nature Center vehicle is not available, a personal vehicle (reimbursed at the IRS recommended rate) may be needed for Cincinnati Nature Center business.

  • Background Checks: Employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of BCI and FBI background checks.  Background checks are conducted in compliance with applicable federal and state law, under code 5104.013.
  • CPR & First Aid: Certification must be obtained and maintained throughout employment.
  • Professional Learning, Development, and Required Training:  Employees shall engage in ongoing professional learning and development as well as shall complete ongoing required training relevant to safety, certification, and best business practices.
  • Special Events: From time to time, employees shall be required to support special events which may fall outside of the normal work schedule including weekends/evenings.
