Position Summary: As director for Salem Academy & College’s library services and resources, this position provides direction and supervision that ensures the library’s mission and goals align with the institution’s mission and strategic initiatives. This position provides leadership in library development in the areas of user services and resources, instruction, outreach, cooperative initiatives, and budget management. As a member of the college faculty this position also participates in faculty governance and committee(s) membership.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee innovation and development in the areas of user services and resources, instruction, cooperative initiatives, and outreach to enhance library effectiveness.
  • Lead library personnel including full-time librarians, library staff, and library student workers. 
  • Determine fiscal requirements of the library operations, prepare budget recommendations, and monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds to properly allocate budget dollars and maximize impact.
  • Provide library instruction services for Salem College first-year student courses.
  • Lead library assessment initiatives, including instruction assessment and regular organizational reviews, to improve library effectiveness.
  • Work closely with library staff to develop and implement library policies and procedures to support the mission of the library.
  • Work closely with consortia partners and library staff to develop shared services and collections.
  • Work closely with library staff to prepare internal and external reports to support administrative, departmental, governmental, and accreditation requirements and standards.
  • Work closely with the assistant directors of information technology services to ensure effective use of technology for the library and its users.
  • Serve as a member of the college faculty, the Salem College Curriculum Committee, the General Education Committee, the Graduate Education Council, and other campus-wide and ad-hoc committees as needed to assist the academy and college and to advocate for the library.
  • Participate actively in library associations and resource-sharing consortia, including, but not limited to, the Triad Academic Library Association (TALA), North Carolina Independent College & Universities (NCICU), NCLIVE, Carolina Consortium (CC), and WorldShare Management Services (WMS) to actively contribute to the effectiveness, advancement and professional relations of the library and the academy and college.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited school.
  • Record of success as a library administrator including evidence of planning, budgeting, assessment of library services, and at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience providing information literacy instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as an advocate for the library to both internal and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative and equitable approach to library leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstration of strong analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with current and future academic library trends.
  • Demonstration of initiative and strong project management skills in leading projects.

 

Physical Functions

While performing the responsibilities of the director of library services and resources, the employee is required to sit for varying lengths of time; bend, reach, lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally stand, walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard; perform extended periods of work at a computer workstation, view a computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in an office setting.
