Description

Overview: Emergency Hospital Technician performs daily duties of cleaning, stocking, and preparing the main hallway in the hospital for emergencies. Assists primary DVM and intern DVM’s with intake of all emergencies. Oversees proper maintenance of all equipment used such as ultrasound, radiograph equipment, gastroscope tower and scopes. ER technicians are required to have a working knowledge of all surgical and hospital equipment, and to properly maintain and care for equipment.

Who are we looking for? The ideal candidate is reliable, willing to work hard and learn new things with a working knowledge of horses and the veterinary field with the ability to multi-task and a team-player.

Wage and Benefits: $17-$20 per hour. This is a Part-Time position (32 hrs.) on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sundays 8a - 4p. Benefits include a generous employee discount, and continued education stipend.

Starting Responsibilities: 

  • Prepares for each emergency as needed, colic, laceration, ADR, dystocia, lameness, dummy foal, etc.
  • Assist veterinarians with intake of emergency cases and critical care case admission and triage as needed
  • Client communication as needed
  • Assist with euthanasia as requested by DVM
  • Knowledge of HVMS charging system
  • Stock main hallway, drawers, cabinets and other areas
  • Maintain an accurate controlled drug log
  • Knowledge of LEMC’s bio-security protocol
  • Working knowledge of taking radiographs
  • Knowledge of how to clean, sterilize and maintain gastroscope towers and scopes
  • Filling out laboratory purple sheets and outside lab forms properly
  • Assists surgery and medicine teams during clinic hours with emergencies and scheduled appointments
    • Assists in clinical appointments for the surgeon; this will include any lameness’, endoscopies, joint injections, regenerative therapies, etc.
    • Assists internal medicine team; this will include any gastroscopes, neuro exams, etc.
  • Assists surgery and medicine teams with in-house patient tasks such as bandage placement, radiographs, colic work-up, etc.
  • Cross train in other departments of the clinic such as ICU, Surgery, Medicine, Lab and Field to assist those departments when needed or during down time

Qualifications

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: Graduation from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology and successful completion of the VTNE. Must be in good standing with state technician governing association (e.g. CACVT). Equine related experience and/or training preferred.  

 Language Ability:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 

 Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as drug doses, dilutions, percentages, rate, ratio and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, add subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  

Computer Skills: Computer literacy in common computer software programs. Working knowledge of HVMS is a must. 

Special Skills: Equine restraint/handling and horsemanship skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions throughout all four seasons. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of radiation and chemical exposure. Knowledge of MSDS use and personal protective gear including (but not limited to) gloves, masks, respirators and eyewash stations are required. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
