Aquatics Swim Instructor

Description

The instructor is responsible for teaching YMCA swim classes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The instructor must arrive 10-15 minutes prior to assigned lessons.
  • Take attendance of the students in the class. 
  • The instructor will also follow all the pool rules and procedures.
  • Use pool space and equipment accordingly and put all materials and instructor equipment away after lessons.
  • Exhibit a pleasant and understanding manner to the participants while instructing.
  • Have an understanding of class schedules and changes. 
  • The instructor WILL NEVER LEAVE the Class or an individual swimmer UNATTENDED for ANY REASON. 
  • The Instructor will fill out accident reports for any injuries and accidents that occur. If one should occur, he/she will make the necessary actions in first aid and will fill out an accident report and contact a supervisor.
  • Lifeguarding apparel (i.e.: bathing suits, t-shirts and flip-flops) should never be worn in the Health Center.
  • Staff must attend all staff meetings and trainings scheduled by the aquatic department. 
  • The instructor must keep the supervisor informed of any class, pool problems and or members concerns.
  • Instructors are to be appropriately dressed in a one-piece bathing suit.
  • When walking from the pools (25 yard and 50 meter) to the main building, you must have flip-flops and/or shoes and wear clothing when walking through the lobby.
  • When working outside, swim instructors are to wear sun block (minimum of 15 SPF).
  • (Wearing additional tops under bathing suit is not permitted, i.e. one piece swim suit and/or athletic bra). 
  • Job responsibilities include access to protected health information. The employee may access protected health information (PHI) only to the extent that it is necessary for job requirements. May only share PHI with those who have a need to know specific member/participant/employee information in order to complete job responsibilities related to the individual’s participation, payment or company operations. Is expected to complete required HIPAA privacy training and maintain HIPAA compliance at all times.
  • The Aquatics Swim Instructor has access to protected health information (PHI) of Y program participants. The Aquatics Swim Instructor may use and disclose PHI to workforce members for the purpose of treatment, payment and operations only.
  • Actively participates in and upholds the YMCA’s mission to be open and accessible to everyone, regardless of financial situation or special need. Contributes time to raise funds for this worthy and necessary endeavor by supporting the Y’s Annual Giving and Capital Development campaigns.

 

Time Clock:

The employee must record daily hours of work by punching in and out at the time clock in the pool area, no more than 15 minutes before the scheduled class time, and no more than 15 minutes after completion of the lesson.  This must be done each day that you are here.  It is your responsibility to punch in and out in a neat and orderly fashion in order to be paid properly.  Instructors may not go over 40 hours within a one week pay period.

 

Absences:

It is the instructor’s obligation to obtain an approved substitute if missing work is necessary.  You must inform your supervisor of any absences, and the name of your substitute.  The substitute must be approved by the supervisor, and must be actively on the Riverbrook Regional YMCA’s payroll.  Failure to do so may lead to a verbal, written warnings or termination of employment.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be 16 years old or older (13-15 years of age for an aid)
  • Candidate must have earned the following certifications:
    • WSI (Water Safety Instructor)
    • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification
    • Professional or Community CPR with AED.
  • The instructor must have a thorough knowledge of swimming skills as well as ability to teach the skills.  Swim Instructor must have knowledge of principles, purpose, and programs of the YMCA.
