Position Purpose:
Under the general supervision of school administration, the Substitute Teacher will support student learning and classroom continuity in the absence of the regular teacher by implementing provided lesson plans and instructional materials. Duties and expectations include maintaining a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment; addressing basic educational needs of students; and communicating relevant information to appropriate school staff regarding student behavior, progress, or classroom activities.

Job Duties:

  • Implements pre-established lesson plans and instructional materials left by the regular teacher in alignment with school policies, goals, and objectives.

  • Maintains a classroom environment that is safe, respectful, and conducive to individual and group learning, while fostering student engagement and productivity.

  • Delivers instruction across various subject areas as assigned, which may include reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music, following the prescribed curriculum and instructional materials.

  • Uses available time effectively to ensure continuity of learning, adapting instructional strategies as needed based on the provided plans and classroom dynamics.

  • Provides academic support to all students, including those with special needs, through individual and small-group instruction when necessary and feasible within the scope of the assignment.

  • Promotes responsible citizenship and respectful behavior, reinforcing classroom rules and expectations aligned with school policies and administrative guidelines.

  • Maintains order and student discipline in accordance with school policies to support a functional learning environment.

  • Maintains accurate records as required, such as attendance and notes on student behavior or instructional progress, and reports any significant issues to school administration or the regular teacher.

  • Communicates professionally with students and, when necessary, with staff or administrators regarding classroom activities or concerns.

  • Supervises students responsibly during all assigned periods, including transitions, lunch,  emergency drills, and school transportation, as directed.

  • Administers assessments or assignments provided by the classroom teacher or school, following specific instructions and testing protocols.

  • Collaborates with school staff when necessary to ensure consistency and support for student learning and school routines.

  • Fulfills other duties as assigned, including covering additional classrooms, supporting school events, or assisting with administrative tasks within the scope of the role.

Qualifications

  • Certification/License: State of Colorado Substitute or Teaching license preferred
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred
