WOODLAND POND CONFORMANCE STATEMENT

In the performance of their respective duties and responsibilities all employees are expected to conform to the following:

Position Summary     
A Phlebotomist serves the Residents of Woodland Pond by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (*CF indicates Critical Function)

  • Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing documentation; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel

  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification

  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingersticks

  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures

  • Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time

  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed

  • Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nurse-manager

  • Performs bleeding-times tests by entering results to the computer; notifying pathologist of results falling outside normal ranges

  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes

  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations

  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations

  • Serves and protects the community by adhering to professional standards, departmental policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.

  • Deciphers the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient

  • Coordinates with BioReference transport of all specimen samples to a nearby laboratory

  • Centrifuge blood samples, depending on if this is allowed in the state you are working in

  • Completes all required training and in-services

  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma with two year’s experience in a similar position, or,

  2. Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or one year’s experience in a similar position

  3. Six months of phlebotomy experience preferred, preferably in a hospital or long term care setting

  4. Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and information; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals

  5. Ability to read, write, and understand medical and nursing terminology

  6. Proficiency with computers and standard office software

  7. Excellent communication skills; ability to present information and respond to questions from all levels of staff and the public

  8. Demonstrated knowledge of the appropriate skills for communicating with individuals of all ages, especially the geriatric population
