The VP of Accounting will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and scalability as our company grows. This leader will guide a high-performing accounting team, manage financial reporting, and partner closely with executive leadership to support strategic decision-making.

Our ideal candidate is a proven finance leader who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You are honest, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, with the ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on execution. If you are passionate about building and scaling accounting operations while making a meaningful impact, this is the opportunity for you!

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, payroll, and fixed asset management.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Lead the consolidation of U.S. and Mexico financials, partnering with cross-border teams to deliver accurate, compliant, and timely consolidated reporting.
  • Review and analyze financial statements, reports, and reconciliations for accuracy and compliance with GAAP (or IFRS, as applicable).
  • Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal controls, policies, and procedures that safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to develop financial strategies, manage budgets and forecasts, and monitor performance against targets.
  • Provide financial insights and analysis to support key business decisions and long-term planning.
  • Manage annual audits and oversee relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in accounting standards, regulations, and tax laws, ensuring timely adoption and compliance.
  • Mentor, develop, and lead the accounting team, fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate and implement systems, tools, and process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability.
  • May also oversee cash flow management to ensure operational stability and growth readiness.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance leadership experience, ideally within a high-growth eCommerce, retail, or consumer goods company.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop accounting teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge with expertise in GAAP compliance (IFRS experience a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-entity financial consolidation (U.S. and international, particularly Mexico).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner effectively across teams and influence at all levels.
  • Hands-on, proactive, and solutions-oriented leader who thrives in both strategic and operational work.

Location & Work Environment:

Our Finance and Accounting team is based in Austin, Texas, with flexibility for remote work during normal business hours (CST). While we welcome applicants from various locations, our ideal candidate will be in or near Austin, TX, to allow for close collaboration with our leadership team.

About Portland Leather

We have come a long way since the garage days! Portland Leather Goods was established in early 2016 by our founder Curtis Matsko. Before Portland Leather Goods, you couldn’t find a simply designed, affordable bag made from high quality full–grain leather. Even if the aesthetic and the price were right, the leather felt and looked cheap, or worse, it wasn’t even real leather! In order to get a beautiful full grain leather bag, you had to spend a fortune. We’re proud to make a leather bag with classic appeal at a price everyone can feel good about.

At Portland Leather Goods, we are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds to join our team.
