Description

The Apprentice Dog Trainer position is an interim position comprised of three phases:

  • Assessment Phase: an initial 1-2 week period working with a Senior Dog Trainer to assess specific areas for training and development. This initial phase will set the expected time frame for training, the scope of training as defined by the Dog Trainer skill areas, and the structure of training in terms of skill sequencing.
  • Training Phase: a period of 6-12 months or more in duration in which you will work along side a Senior Dog Trainer to master the training skills indicated during the Assessment Phase. The Training Phase will consist of a defined critical path with sequential milestones as indicated by the Assessment Phase.
  • Evaluation Phase: a phase that will run concurrently with the Training Phase and be measured against the critical milestone path. At each skill milestone, the Senior Dog Trainer will document an evaluation of the skill mastery and the critical milestone path will be updated. Promotion to Behavior Counselor will occur when all skills have been mastered and the critical milestone path completed. It is expected that the time required for each person will be different.

Promotion to Dog Trainer: it is expected that approximately 75% of the Apprentice Dog Trainers will be promoted to Dog Trainer within 6-18 months of being in made an Apprentice Dog Trainer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing New Dog Integrations, Behavior Evaluations, and Walk Assessments
  • Performing group classes, private lessons, and Train and Play Sessions
  • Following up directly with clients on the details of their dog’s behavior (whether results from training services or otherwise)
  • Communicating the behavior needs of dogs to all relevant staff
  • Training associates on recognizing key dog behavior in order to create a safe and fun environment for all dogs
  • Driving revenue (both training and otherwise) from clients based on their dog’s behavior needs
  • Documenting in detail all client communications and dog observations into PetShop
  • Learning communication techniques to become an effective client advocate
  • Studying and reading about dog behavior through resources in the company library
  • Assisting at off-site events

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one year experience working with and / or handling dogs in a professional setting.
  • Must own an iPhone or Android device.
  • Knowledge of Biscuits & Bath and a genuine interest in the well-being of dogs.
  • Ability to learn about and understand each dog as an individual with his or her own personality traits, good and bad habits, past experiences, etc.
  • Ability to juggle a variety of responsibilities, while balancing competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
  • High degree of independent decision-making and problem-solving capability.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be physically fit to lift dogs 50+ lbs, bend, kneel, stand for long periods of time and perform requirements of the job.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background check.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint & Word) and Internet savvy.
