Description

Hackley School seeks an experienced full-time Associate Director of College Counseling for the 2023-2024 school year. The Associate Director of College Counseling is an integral member of the College Counseling Office, who will offer college counseling and guidance to students and families, perform administrative tasks that advance work on behalf of students in their college search process, and promote the success of the schools overall college counseling program.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports to the Director of College Counseling.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Associate Directors responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing college counseling guidance to approximately 35% of each class (roughly 35 students per grade level). Assignments are made in winter of sophomore year; students are counseled as needed until January of junior year, when individual counseling begins in earnest.

  • Communicating regularly with counselees and families about the various stages in the college counseling process

  • Generating persuasive, individualized letters of support for each senior and working with the office to submit these and other credentials to colleges, universities, and scholarship programs

  • Helping to maintain working relationships with college admission professionals at colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad by visiting an appropriate number of college campuses each year

  • Assisting with campus visits from college admissions representatives

  • Working to ensure that college admissions officers have an accurate and up-to-date perception of Hackley

  • Contributing to an atmosphere, attitude, and track record of continual program development and improvement in support of students and their families

  • Supporting programming related to college counseling for families in grades 9-12

  • Maintaining an appropriate level of engagement with ninth and tenth grade students and families so as to provide education and guidance as related to the schools college counseling philosophy and ways in which to view the college process during these years.

  • Providing guidance to academic advisors, students, and parents about the course selection process as it pertains to college counseling

  • Maintaining detailed and accurate records for counselees

  • Keeping abreast of the rapidly changing college admissions scene

  • Contributing to the production of the annual report to the Board of Trustees

  • Offering guidance to students about appropriate summer enrichment opportunities

  • Maintaining an active and engaged presence in professional organizations such as NACAC, ACCIS, College Board, and others to keep current with issues in the admission and counseling professions

  • Performing other special projects and support as assigned by the Director of College Counseling

Qualifications

Qualifications and Characteristics:

  • Bachelors degree is required; advanced degree preferred

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in college counseling and/or college admissions and an extensive, active network of college admissions contacts nationally

  • Knowledge of curriculum and trends as related to college admissions

  • Knowledge of SCOIR would be a plus

  • Eagerness to engage with students and their families to support them as they navigate the college application process

  • Excellent administrative, communications, writing, and public speaking skills

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • A proficiency in data analysis

  • A flexible and patient collaborator with administrators, faculty, and staff

  • Ability to bring joy, kindness, humor, maturity, and empathy to the school environment
