ABOUT THE POSITION

Gann Academy seeks candidates for a 10-month full-time 2024-25, 1-year term position, teaching Jewish Studies and supporting Jewish life at Gann Academy. Successful candidates will have a passion for Jewish Studies, experience teaching youth, and a commitment to collaborating, reflecting, and growing their teaching practice. Personal qualities such as creativity, curiosity, perseverance, and flexibility are desirable, as are effective communication skills with students and families. Candidates will be able to connect well with teenagers, serve as role models of engaged and inspired Jewish living, and facilitate students’ development of their Jewish identities. Candidates should enjoy working in a pluralistic Jewish setting and engaging students from all Jewish backgrounds.

 

This is a 1-year term, 10-month position starting in August 2024 and reporting to the Director of Education. The salary range is between $50,000 and $70,000, commensurate with relevant work experience and qualifications.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Teaching Duties:

This 10-month position includes the following teaching duties

  • Teach a Jewish food/farming/cooking course.
  • Teach a Jewish elective that would attract a broad range of students.
  • Teach other Jewish Studies courses depending on background. 
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, and colleagues in person and via email.
  • Use technology and other educational tools to support student learning.
  • Attend 4 Shabbatonim throughout the year and assist in Shabbatonim planning.
  • Assist in holiday and special programming, and attend and participate in these events/programs.
  • Lead Zman Kodesh twice a week and on Rosh Hodesh.

Community Involvement & Engagement:

  • Attend and participate in communal programs outside the classroom during school hours; model and encourage appropriate behavior; and monitor students during events and programming.
  • Attend and participate in open houses, graduation, and other special events which may take place in the evenings and weekends.

Collaborative Responsibilities

  • Work with students outside of the classroom as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings; collaborate with department members and instructional director on curriculum development, lesson planning, student issues, and department initiatives.
  • Assist colleagues with substitution when able; arrange and communicate class coverage as needed.

Professional Development, Growth, and Training

  • Attend and participate in all faculty/staff work-day programs, in-service training in August, orientation programs, seminars, and safety training/drills.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree, rabbinical ordination, or Ph.D. in Jewish Studies preferred
  • Comfortable teaching a broad range of subjects, including Jewish thought, ethics, and history, as well as Tanakh and rabbinic literature, ideally in the original language
  • Interest in teaching Modern Hebrew and Jewish Arts is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A commitment to student-centered, mastery-based teaching
  • Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include dexterity in operating office machines and supplies, including—but not limited to—computers, telephones, electronic calculators, copy machines, and printers. Stooping, bending, reaching for files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods are common.
