The Dorm Resident Advisors (we call them "Summer Chaperones") are responsible for providing safety and security to the students residing at the University of St. Thomas dormitory while providing a comforting and nurturing environment for those students. Houston Ballet houses 130+ students in this dormitory for the duration of the Summer Intensive Program, which runs for 5 weeks from June 17 – July 22, 2023.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student & Dormitory Supervision
- Work with a team of 8-9 other summer chaperones to ensure safety and security of 130+ students (with direct responsibility of approximately 14 – 16 students per chaperone) and create a supportive and nurturing environment for the students.
- Live at the University of St. Thomas dormitory and supervise students 6 days a week for the 5-week program.
- Chaperones will move in several days early for a comprehensive orientation and training with Houston Ballet Academy Staff
- Work all weekends (1.5 weekdays per week are allotted for off-days)
- Assist students with Move-In at the start of the program and Move-Out at the end of the program
- Attend and supervise weekend activities with students (Ex. waterparks, Galleria, museums, etc.)
- Transport students in a 15-passenger van between dorms and Houston Ballet, and to and from the following—
- Weekend Activities (see above bullet)
- Local Houston Airports (Bush and Hobby)
- Medical Appointments & supplemental outings
- Participate in delivering an orientation for all incoming students.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships by conducting one group meeting per week and individual student meetings as needed.
- Ensure that students are keeping their curfew and following all dormitory and Houston Ballet rules and policies.
- Communicate with students’ parents/guardians as needed.
- Demonstrate the ability to make independent and sound decisions in all situations.
- Attend meetings with members of Houston Ballet staff as needed.
- Maintain constant communication with other Summer Chaperones and Houston Ballet employees in order to share key information and accomplish objectives.
- Respond with enthusiasm to directives from Lead and Assistant Lead chaperones, as well as other administrative staff, and show support for departmental and organizational decisions.
- Use discretion when taking students to doctor’s appointments.
- Maintain an understanding of Houston Ballet policies and emergency procedures.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Strong understanding and desire to work with adolescent children.
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to provide supervision in a responsible, caring, and respectful manner and serve as a role model.
- Ability to drive a 15-passenger van. Excellent Driving record.
- Resident Assistance experience in a residence home (college dorm preferred)
- Experience working with adolescents ages 14 – 17 a plus.
- Ability to handle high-stress and/or unexpected situations and/or circumstances.
- CPR and First Aid certification (paid for by Houston Ballet).
- Must be available to sleep in residence
- Proficient personal computer skills including e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
Compensation / Accommodations
- Salary as determined by Houston Ballet at time of position acceptance.
- Chaperones have a private room and bathroom equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, and wi-fi.
- Breakfast and dinner each workday.
- Reimbursement for activities and dinners while chaperoning students.
- UST dorm, private room with private bathroom.
- Moderate noise (examples: students in dorm, business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
- Monday –Sunday, 24 hour flex shift.
