GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: 

Resident Directors (RD) at Pacific University play a pivotal role in creating a supportive and inclusive living-learning environment within the residence halls. Resident Directors combine the principles of student development theory and best practices in student affairs to enhance the residential experience for our students.

 

Resident Directors are generally appointed for a two-year period, with an opportunity for an extension at the discretion of the Associate Director for Campus Living.

 

The Resident Director’s (RD’s) position is a 10-month live-on position, running approximately from mid July to mid May. Pacific University provides room and utilities. In addition, the RD is responsible for or assists in at least one Pacific University Student Affairs program area.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Student Development and Support:
    • Foster a welcoming and inclusive community within the residence hall that promotes personal and academic growth
    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to resident assistants (RAs) to ensure they excel in their roles as student leaders
    • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with residents to address concerns, provide resources, and encourage personal development
  • Community Development:
    • Actively develop community within the residence hall through intentional interactions with residents
    • Manage programs and initiatives that promote community engagement, cultural competence, and social responsibility
    • Model community participation through attendance at RA and resident events, performances, and competitions across campus
    • Build a culture of inclusivity that encourages diversity and equity within the residence hall
    • Encourage and maintain a sense of pride and identity within each residence hall
    • Address and resolve community concerns as needed, while prioritizing restoring positive relationships
  • Crisis Management and Student Well-being:
    • Serve as a first-responder during emergency situations, including on-call responsibilities
    • Collaborate with campus partners to address students' physical and emotional well-being, referring them to appropriate resources when necessary
    • Implement and enforce university policies and procedures related to residence hall living
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Manage residence hall operations, including maintenance requests, and physical space assessments
    • Oversee the budget for residence hall programming and maintenance, ensuring responsible fiscal management
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student conduct and incidents within the residence halls
    • Participate in all Campus Living departmental processes as needed (examples include: RA Training and Selection, Room Selection, etc)
  • Professional Development and Collaboration:
    • Stay current on best practices, trends, and research in student affairs and residence life
    • Collaborate with campus partners, including student support, academic advisors, counseling services, facilities and campus safety, to provide holistic support to students
    • Participate in departmental and university-wide committees and initiatives

 

 

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: 

Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

 

JOB SCOPE: 

Performs position duties under direct supervision of Associate Director of Campus Living, operating from established practices. Decisions are made within general University policy guidelines, and may require some autonomous decision-making. Decisions of significant consequence are made in consultation with supervisor.

 

 

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY: 

Responsible for residential student-staff members in assigned residence halls, as well as other student-staff or graduate student-staff as assigned. Responsibility includes employee selection, training, development, mentoring and/or corrective action, managing leave requests and other student-staff related concerns or needs.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an inclusive and diverse environment
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills

 

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or Education

OR

  • Previous experience in residence life or student affairs, with a strong understanding of student development theory

  • Communicates with students, faculty, staff and the public appropriate to the age of the  individual served. 
  • Builds on basic learning and carries it from one situation to another.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem solving and decision-making. 
  • Asks questions and seeks assistance. 
  • Takes responsibility to eliminate the source of problems. 
  • Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and  staff. 
  • Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job. 
  • Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters,  listening, paraphrasing, and questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural  backgrounds. 
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.   

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Most work occurs in either an office environment or in a residence hall. Required to work 2-3 evenings per week, occasional weekends and some holidays. Serve in on-call rotation with other professional staff members from several areas, including consulting and/or responding after hours and on weekends to critical campus situations.

 

Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, climbing stairs, carrying and other movements may be required. Working at a computer keyboard involving extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate how they can perform the essential functions listed above. All Campus Living employees are required to submit background checks.

 

The Resident Director is required to live in one of the University’s residence halls in an apartment assigned by the University. A significant other/partner/spouse and/or any child dependents may reside with the employee while the primary employee is current, pending a satisfactory background check on each individual. While the RD is within the two year appointment, they are able to continue living in the apartment from during the break in work schedule over the summer.
