This Upper and Middle School Band Director is responsible for providing vision and direction for Westminster’s Band Program in alignment with Westminster’s philosophy and strategic goals as well as National Music Standards. Principally seated in the Upper School, this role serves as a co-conductor of the Upper School Band and offers specific expertise in percussion. In partnership with the co-director, this role curates repertoire, teaches and conducts students, encouraging engagement, participation, and creativity. As a direct member of the Middle School band program, this position will help launch Middle School students on their percussion journey, conduct age-appropriate repertoire and lead ensemble work. This position serves as an instrumental music expert with special priority on Middle School “sectional days.” 

 

Anticipated start date: August 1, 2024

Supervisor: Head of the Upper School

Position Status:  This position is a salaried, exempt, full-time, regular, 10-month position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant undergraduate degree; advanced degree with emphasis on percussion music education preferred 

  • Familiarity with national trends in music education, including curriculum planning, interdisciplinary studies, and assessment initiatives

  • Teaching proficiency in multiple instruments preferred

  • Experience with a co-teaching/co-directing model preferred

  • Previous classroom teaching experience preferred

  • Previous professional performance experience preferred

OPPORTUNITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as an Ensemble Co-Director for the Upper Band.

  • Serve as an Instrument Specialist (percussion) for Upper and Middle School Band.

  • Support Middle School band team through co-conducting, including working with extracurricular jazz ensemble

  • Collaborate as a member of the Cross Divisional Band Staff to develop a comprehensive 6th- 12th Band Program, comprised of separate 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands, an Upper School Symphonic Band and an Upper School Wind Ensemble

  • Work with the Director of Performing Arts to manage group administrative duties, including music library organization, facility and equipment logistics, as well as concert and event production.

  • Create lesson plans, course materials, and instructional resources that cater to students' diverse learning needs and abilities.

  • Collaborate with other Upper School teachers as part of an Upper School Performing Arts Department.

  • Fulfill duties standard to an Upper School teacher including as Advisement

  • Participate in school-wide Band initiatives

  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 


 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; and engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified.

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.

 

TRAVEL

 


 

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.  Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required.
