Job Summary:

The Children’s Services Specialist helps to provide resources to HRETA schools and community organizations to promote WHRO’s early learning resources. This position is responsible for scheduling, planning and executing the vans and other Children’s Services programs, along with supporting other Children’s Services and Education Services initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with the Children Services Outreach Specialist to schedule WHRO STEM Van, Literacy Van and Environmental Van visits
  • Drive WHRO’s Education Vans to various locations and provide programs to expand educational products and services to Title 1 school communities and military families. 
  • Develop and conduct curriculum-based STEM hands-on activities on location (STEM, Environmental, Literacy)
  • Develop relationships with schools, community centers, libraries and other community organizations
  • Manage documentation of Literacy, STEM and Environmental van activities
  • Provide trainings for children and parents at various locations on PBS KIDS Resources.
  • Align PBS KIDS content to Virginia Standards of Learning
  • Collect research through pre- and post- evaluations and prepare reports
  • Assist with coordinating the PBS KIDS Writers Contest 
  • Coordinate and implement assigned activities and programs (Reading Camps, STEM Camps, Reading Buddies, Bright by Text, etc.)
  • Organize and maintain inventory of PBS KIDS learning resources
  • Provide assistance at defined community WHRO events (Virginia Children’s Festival,  Spelling Bee, Great Computer Challenge, Read Across America, The Month of the Military Child, Instructional Technology Summit)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience working with young children in an instructional setting
  • Valid, current driver’s license and ability to drive large vehicles
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings
  • Customer service, organizational and presentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent technical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Skills/Background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Two to five years of experience teaching young children as well as training parents

Physical Activities

  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Lifting and moving objects up to 30 pounds in all directions
  • Moving wheeled objects up to 80 pounds from parking lots into buildings and back to parking lots
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
