Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Rate of pay: $100 per day during camp season.

 

Under the supervision of the Activity Manager, the Experiential Arts Specialist thoughtfully develops and delivers music, holistic wellness, and arts and crafts activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers age and abilities. Assists in the management of the arts and crafts space and related equipment and supplies.

  1. Develop and deliver an experiential arts program that delves into music, holistic wellness, and arts & crafts that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and utilizes the camps natural environment
    • Implement a variety of age and ability appropriate activities in a variety of experiential arts topics such as music, theatre, arts & crafts, holistic wellness, and hands on activities
    • Serve as the subject matter expert on experiential arts and Girl Scout programming for all ages
    • Evaluate the success of the experiential arts program
  2. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures as outlines in Girl Scouts Heart of Central California's (GSHCC) Safety Activity Checkpoint and American Camp Association (ACA) standards
    • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior
    • Provide staff coverage and facilitate camper evaluations
  3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the activities center area
    • Maintain the equipment and supplies, including documenting a clear and concise inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner
    • Be responsible for observing hazards or areas of concern in the activities center and alerting other appropriate staff
    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
  • Participate in pre-camp staff training, as well as in-service training sessions
  • Assist with the organization of the living unit, providing camper supervision and participating as a positive role model
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp during pre-camp training, after each session and during end-of-season cleaning period.
  • Chaperone arriving and departing campers on buses as assigned
  • Assists with the delivery and pickup of camper luggage
  • Assist in the kitchen for at least one shift per camp session.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Experience with arts programming, including but not limited to: Music, arts & crafts, holistic wellness
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR, desired
  • Valid Drivers License with a clean driving record
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, unless a qualifying medical or religious exemption is needed

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to function independently
  • Highly responsible and trustworthy
  • Training and experience in working with children in experiential arts, desired
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels

 

Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position

  • Ability to communicate in English to provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers

 

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

We are an all-girls camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with girls for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.

 

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
