General Overview

The summer leadership intern is a full-time temporary internship that works within the Business Operations department supporting the Horizons Huntsman Leadership Summit of the Sigma Chi Leadership Institute. Travel, lodging, and all food on-site will be provided. Additionally, Block 1 Horizon interns will be awarded an $500 scholarship, Block 2 Horizon interns will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship, and Block 3 interns will be awarded a $500 scholarship from the Sigma Chi Foundation upon completion of the program. The primary responsibility of the Sigma Chi Leadership Institute is the ongoing development and implementation of Sigma Chi’s educational and leadership curriculum, and the primary responsibility of the summer intern is to support the preparation and execution of Horizons. The summer intern will have the unique opportunity to assist in running large leadership conferences while gaining many professional skills and experiences.  This position requires well-developed communication skills, organization, time management and the ability to work quickly in a new environment.

 

 

Responsibilities

Leadership Program Duties

  • Provide first level customer support for attendees of summer conferences via phone and email.
  • Organize and compile supplies for the Horizons program on-site.
  • Obtain working knowledge of Sigma Chi Leadership programs, including conference planning and execution.

On-site Duties

  • Attend Horizons as on-site staff support, including a blend of office and outdoor activities.
  • Help set up and administer Horizons participant activities.
  • Answer questions and assist in providing direction to attendees and alumni volunteers.
  • Deliver supplies and materials to participants and alumni volunteers as needed.
  • Work on emergency assignments that arise. 

General Headquarters Duties

  • Obtain a working knowledge of all affiliated Sigma Chi companies’ operations, staff, and functions.
  • Provide customer support across all affiliated Sigma Chi companies as needed.
  • Provide assistance on special filing, data compilation, and organization projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program.
  • Sigma Chi membership in good standing.
  • Must have previously attended Horizons.

  • Exemplary customer service, interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivating, goal-oriented with a strong sense of initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines with personal initiative.
  • Team-oriented philosophy with the ability to multitask projects and responsibilities.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, persistent, and thorough.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Basic knowledge of Sigma Chi Fraternity programs and initiatives. 

Physical Demands

  • While performing the in-office duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than 50 percent of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse and similar machines.
  • While performing the out-of-office duties of this position, the employee may be subject to prolonged periods of light to heavy physical exertion over the course of 12–24-hour periods.
  • Being able to lift, carry, and move packages, curriculum material, and performance equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. May also be required to transport heavier materials with the use of a dolly.

Working Hours and Conditions

  • Most Horizons intern work takes place in an outdoor setting, where there is rough terrain, potential wildlife, personal interruptions, and outdoor noises. Office hours will be flexible and extended while at Horizons.
  • The office culture is relaxed and open-minded about regular change and growth.
